My friends run a small English school in a poor part of Yunnan, close to the border with Sichuan.
They are looking for a volunteer English teacher for two weeks from 22 July to 5 August 2008, to teach and help out at a summer school for local children. They provide accommodation, food, entertainment, assistance with transport costs and a small stipend.
The area is famous for its mangos, which are now in season, and some of the children - aged 7 - 14 yerars old - are from different ethnic groups and hill tribes - including Yi, Pumi, Lisu as well as Han.
The place - Hua Ping - is a small modern town - close to the rail link between Chengdu and Kunming at Panzhihua.
As well as helping improve the spoken English of the students, there's the opportunity to explore the area, meet local people, improve your Chinese and sample the hospitality this area is famous for.
Last year several foreigners taught at Hua Ping - and all enjoyed the experience as a highlight of their time in China.
You don't have to be a trained teacher to help out - just someone who can speak English!
The placement can be shared with others - and if you aren't able to commit to the whole two weeks, it is possible to share the duties with others. It is easy to get to Hua Ping from Kunming, Chengdu, Dali or Lijiang.
