The biggest beer festival in China is held in Qingdao each year. Usually held in August, this year it is being held later, due to some sporting event in Beijing in August/September.

1. From China Daily:
The festival is held in August every year. The event is a raucous celebration of Qingdao's brewing heritage.

During the daytime, there are official ceremonies that celebrate Qingdao's heritage as well as carnival type rides, food and games.

In the evening, the event really picks up as crowds flock to huge tents set up by each beer company with a presence in China. One can sit down and order beer or snacks and watch (or participate in) various performances such as karaoke, concerts, auctions, or comedy.

Qingdao Int'l Beer Festival

Qingdao Beer FestivalCo-sponsored by relevant state ministries/commissions and the People's Government of Qingdao City, Qingdao International Beer Festival was started in 1991 when the city was celebrating her 100th birthday. In the last decade, Qingdao International Beer Festival is becoming a large-sacale state-level festive event for the people of the whole city.

For the celebration, top brewers are invited from Germany, the United States, Denmark and Britain including Budweiser, Carlsberg, and domestic beer giants like Tsingdao Beer and Beijing Beer have booked booths in the camps. When the festival is coming, the Beer City becomes a place of boundless joy with great dins of drums and trumpets. map of beer town

There are spectacular fireworks shows on the sea, together with a great parade made up of military bands, ethnic tropes, and arrays of colorful flags, baloons, and festooned vehicles. Tourists can indulge themselves with beers of many brands from all over the country.

Qingdao is deceptively named "Green Island" in Chinese, despite it having no island, and locals refer to this laidback town as the "island city." . With its clean beaches, European architecture and great beer, Qingdao boats an idyllic getaway to spend a few relaxing days strolling along the boardwalk while watching the sun rise over the ocean.

Having beers as a medium, the festival promotes the friendship and economic cultural exchanges between people of Qingdao and others all over the world and also promotes Qingdao to the world front.

Qingdao Beer Festival promotes Laoshan tourism

The annual Qingdao International Beer Festival now has become a reputable tourism brand after seventeen-years operation, the brand further enriched the tourism resource of Laoshan District, Qingdao, which featured the three tourism brands-Laoshan Tourism Culture Festival in spring, Qingdao International Beer Festival in summer and the all-year-long Laoshan Scenic Spot. The three brands consequently strengthened the holistic brand-Laoshan tourism.

The three tourism brands in Laoshan differentiate from each other and supplement each other, not only in terms of time and season but also in terms of style and intension. beer parade
beer parade
Qingdao Beer Festival is a brand with rich humanistic features. The unbridled drinking in the beer canopy, the excited performance on the stage, the cheerful scene of the Carnival and the surging people inside and outside the city, everything delivers the characteristics of humanistic tourism. The artistic travel, shows and performance, fashion shows, "personal bottle-blowing," "one-minute fast drinking," "blind fast drinking" and "beer-drinking relay" further enhanced the humanistic feature. The development of the tourism brand with rich humanistic features cannot be belittled. With the over 3 million visitors each year, the Beer Festival has become the second grand beer festival, following the Munich Beer Festival in Germany, for which Qingdao is renowned as the "oriental Munich" and the Beer Festival ranks first among the top ten Chinese festivals. Further, the Beer Festival drives the economy of Laoshan, even Qingdao more powerfully than the "golden weeks." In 2006, Qingdao International Beer Festival promoted the consumption to RMB2.1 billion yuan within 16 days, together with the average occupancy rate of star hotels to over 96 percent, the overseas visitors received by main international and domestic travel agencies increased by 30 percent year on year. These data has exceeded the statistics of the "gold weeks" in the past years.

Laoshan Tourism Cultural Festival actually is a tourism brand integrating folk custom and culture, industrial resource, natural resource and social resource. big crowds
big crowds
The 4th Laoshan Tourism Culture Festival, lasting for one and a half year, is to be held in this year. It includes five sections and sixteen items, such as Laoshan Tea Culture Festival, Shazikou Recreational Mountain and Seaside Tour, Beizhai Cherry Festival and the Peach Blossom Festival, which integrates the industrial resources of tea, cherry, flowers and fishery, natural resources of mountain and sea, social resources of mountainous villages and fishing villages, as well as folk-custom resources of Laoshan folk stories and local customs. While providing the visitors more entertainment and tourist resorts, the Tourism Culture Festival provides local people with more profit-making opportunities. The eight-day Peach Blossom Festival attracted more than 300,000 visitors, and the direct income reached over RMB12 million yuan; Shazikou Recreational Mountain and Seaside Tour increased the daily occupancy rate of the home hotel to over 95 percent, some visitors even lived here from then; Laoshan Tea Culture Festival launched the tea-picking activity named as "one-day tour of the hometown of tea," which attracted more than 220,000 visitors during the festival and created income of more than RMB16 million yuan; The yield of Beizhai cherry reduced by 60 percent this year, but the Cherry Festival stimulated the price to increase to two times than that of previous years, also it attracted more than 400,000 visitors, together with the direct income exceeding RMB 5.2 million yuan, the ticket income reaching RMB 8.6 million yuan, increased by 75.5 percent year on year, which attributed to the fruit farmers' income growth against yield reduction.

Laoshan Tourism Culture Festival also extended the industrial chain, e.g. get your gear off
get your gear off
the Tea Festival bred the tour package including picking tea in the field, visit to tea processing plant, self-help tea frying, participation in the tea culture knowledge competition; The Recreational Mountain and Seaside Tour helped the fishers develop recreational fishing traveling activities such as offshore fishing, onboard experience of fishing life, etc. While creating more incomes for local people, the extension of industrial chain enriched the tourism-related products and enhanced the brand value of Laoshan Tourism Culture Festival.

The world famous Laoshan Scenic Spot Tourism is an old brand of Laoshan tourism. The No.1 famous mountain on the sea, the legend of Laoshan Taoist, the Jufeng and Yangkou Resort, Nine North Waters, Chaoyin Fall and Longtan Fall appealed more than 2 million visitors each year. Currently, the development of Qingdao International Beer Festival and Laoshan Tourism Culture Festival accelerated the development of Laoshan Scenic Spot Tourism. Meanwhile, the Laoshan Scenic Spot Tourism adds depth and profoundness to the two new brands. The three brands supplement each other and boost each other, jointly creating the grand holistic brand of Laoshan Tourism.

Qingdao Beer Festival
When:
Aug 2008 (annual)
Where:
Qingdao
The beer known to Western drinkers as Tsing-Tao (and much loved by fans of Chinese food) is celebrated in its home town. The brewery opened in 1904 and a first glimpse around town reveals why. This former German concession now sports a bizarre mixture of German design and Chinese culture, complete with wrought iron balconies, grand facades, European gardens and, of course, dragons.
Tsing-Tao is the ancient name of the town. The taste of a beer appreciated all over the world comes from the purity of the Laoshan spring water, rising just east of Qingdao. Events for the beer festival are fairly trade-orientated, with industry demonstrations and the like, but there's no reason why aficionados can't sneak into the brewery and sample the goods if they're in the area.

Qingdao Beer Festival
Ganbei to the World!

Text by Charles J. Dukes

Imagine ordering beer for 3.4 million, with sides, and a bit of entertainment while you are at it.

That's the task of the organizers of the world-famous 16th Annual Qingdao International Beer Festival, the largest such festival in Asia, which begins on August 12 in Qingdao, a coastal city in East China's Shandong Province. The beer will continue to flow for 15 days through August 27.

Wen Yuansheng, vice-director of the beer festival said, "This is the biggest festival in Qingdao, with more than 240,000 square metres of attractions featuring beer, top-level entertainment and a carnival at the main venue. It's a 'Citizen's Festival,' a 'Carnival Festival' and an 'International Festival.' "Our first and main objective in hosting the festival is to he pijiu (drink beer)! Here, we say: Qingdao ganbei (cheers!) with the world."

Qingdao, home of China's famed Tsingtao beer, an official sponsor of the 2008 Olympic Games, and the host city for the 29th Olympic Sailing Regatta in August 2008, will be swarmed by millions of beer drinkers from China and around the world, who are expected to consume in excess of 930 tons (the 2005 festival total) of the city's favourite amber delight. There are two key venues for the celebration, one at its main venue in the Qingdao International Beer City in Lao Shan District, where beers from Qingdao, China and a dozen or more famous international brews will be featured in a carnival atmosphere, and at a second, more subdued, venue in Huiquan Square near Qingdao's No. 1 bathing beach in Shinan District. But the festival is celebrated citywide, on Pijiu Jie (Beer Street) and in every bar and restaurant in the city.

"The main difference between our festival and the one in Munich (the Oktoberfest with about six million visitors, who consumed about five million litres of beer and more than 200,000 pork sausages in 2005) is that theirs is mainly a local event, while ours is an international event."

The first high-level test event for the 2008 Olympic Sailing Regatta, the International

Sailing Federation-backed, Olympicclass "Good Luck Qingdao International Regatta 2006" (August 18-31), featuring more than 300 sailboats and as many as 500 sailors from 45 countries and regions, will only add to the international flavour of this year's beer festival. It will also fully test the city's preparedness as a co-host with Beijing of the Games.

It's also certain to attract the attention of TV giants such as CCTV, CNN and the

BBC.

Not that anyone needs any special event or reason to visit this beautiful, hilly city that rests alongside 870 miles of pristine Yellow Sea coastline, marked by sunny beaches, rocky outcrops, mountain trails, capes, bays and islands. Avoiding the "cookie-cutter" label attached to descriptions of many other Chinese cities, this city of 7.4 million is a favourite of tourists, Chinese or foreign, at any time of the year.

People delight in strolling Qingdao's 40-kilometre-long coastal nature trail, dodging heavy breakers that sometimes slam into the sea wall at the city's May Fourth Park or swimming at any of the city's delightful, well-equipped bathing beaches, which are as clean as any in the world. Because it has retained cultural artefacts and structures from its ancient, colonial and revolutionary periods, there is very much for any tourist --beer drinker or not--to see and do. To all this has been added modern aquariums, museums and other sites of interest, such as some of the most restful and laid-back restaurants and bars, all found near some of the best four- and five-star hotels in China.

The city is a favourite of Chinese honeymooners. Would-be newly-weds can be found posing for wedding pictures on sunny days, especially in and around Lu Xun Park.

But August is a time for drinking beer.

"It all begins with our opening ceremony outside the beer city," Wen said. "Then, when we open the gates, everyone will be greeted by people wearing colourful costumes. There will be songs and a lot of colour.

"Each night, there will be performances on our centre stage (capacity about 3,500)

and all during the day there will be acts on 21 smaller stages on the venue. This is a time of relaxation in Qingdao and we arrange fun for the whole family. There will be a carnival and rides for children and adults, all kinds of entertainment and things to see and do.

"We use the carnival to create an emotional atmosphere and to involve more people. We even have a 'masked ball' so people can really relax and express their passions. Qingdao people are dynamic and emotional, but they also like to relax and enjoy themselves. All this helps us express the concepts of 'Peaceful China, Peaceful Qingdao.'

"We understand that through their emotions, people express their dreams." Wen said organizers leave the recruitment of acts up to a professional talent agency, but past performers have included national and international stars such as singer-musician Zang Tianshuo and other top-grade performing artists from overseas, the Chinese mainland and the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions.

"We're even bringing in a top DJ from the United States," Wen said.

Numerous beer-drinking contests are staged, but while the prizes are big--one

includes a car--the drinking tasks are reasonable and designed for maximum fun and entertainment.

At 10 yuan per ticket (plus drinks) during the day and 20 yuan per ticket at night, the Qingdao International Beer Festival is an entertainment bargain that may be hard to beat. But even at these rates, the festival brings about 2.9 billion yuan (US$363 million) into Qingdao's coffers, more than the revenues from the May 1 and October 1 "Golden Weeks" combined. Wen said prices at the main venue are carefully monitored and controlled to "only slightly higher than outside the beer city," and he said various agencies of the Qingdao Municipal Government keep a close eye on commercial practices, health and safety conditions during the event.

And it works.

As a Chad Pearson wrote on the That's Qingdao Web site, "As a foreigner you will

be swamped with offers of free beer to ganbei. I've gone to the beer festival in the past and not had to buy a single beer. The Chinese are so generous and kind, they are happy to show foreigners a good time." Wen said, "An old saying goes that Qingdao is the Switzerland of Asia or a Hawaii. But if we are to develop well, we must do it according to our own characteristics.

"The beer festival is representative of Qingdao. It shows our characteristics and

brings more national and international people to Qingdao.
"This is why we say, 'ganbei to the world.'"

8. a bad review

Qingdao International Beer Festival

Monday September 10th

The day after I arrived in Qingdao, my hosts decided to do me some good and brought me to the Qingdao International Beer Festival.
China Week 1 023

The Beer Festival was a marketing gimmick invented by the Tsingtao brewery. Tsingtao beer, if you've never heard about it, traces its origins back to the time Qingdao was a German colony. The Germans built a brewery, which continued to operate, and it seems that Tsingtao Beer is the closest China has to a national beer. Despite the name, the Beer Festival isn't really all that International. They're using a Bavarian theme for part of it, and selling German beer, and on the first day - I am told - Musicians from Bavaria play some music (for which they get paid very well).

Despite the apparent popularity of the event, I can't really say too much good about it. It's horribly loud - very loud - the Bavarian theme is so superficial and fake that it is hard to even call it "a mockery of the real Bavaria", there are some rusty rides, and, well, lots of beer. (I am guessing the later is why it's popular at all.) I wonder if Chinese people would feel the same about China-themed events in Europe.

Much to my annoyance, the festival also featured a constant flow of salespeople: Every five minutes or so, some musician would come and offer to play music for money at our table. This, by the way, happened as the stage music was so loud I could hardly talk to my hosts.

Overall I definitely hated the event, and I can only recommend that you stay as far away as possible from it. Don't waste your time and/or money.

9.
Review of 2006 beer festival from White pasty guy

Qingdao Beer Festival

I mentioned a few posts ago that I went to Qingdao last weekend with Louise. The highlight of the trip was the annual Qingdao Beer Festival. For one or two weeks, beer companies from around the world setup a tent, serve their beer, and hire Chinese rock groups, kareoke singers, and models the size of a chopstick (and with the personality of one) to lure people into their tent.

Most Chinese cities have a local beer brewery. Yantai beer is not bad, and at 3RMB per liter ($0.38), you really can't complain. During the summer months all of the restaurants and BBQs serve sanpi, a less carbonated, slighly sweet beer with no preservatives. The no preservatives thing means that you must drink it within 2-3 days of brewing, which is not usually a problem; a BBQ can go through 10+ kegs on a busy night. And we must not forget the always present Tsingtao beer, even available in the US.

I do quite like the beer usually available here, but I was quite excited to have some German, Belgium, Mexican, and other libations available. We walked around the festival and after sitting through some mediocre kareoke singers at some German tents (let me tell you, there is nothing like listening to Chinese pop songs blasting at 200dB while being surrounded by German flags and pictures of Umpa Bands and bratwurst), we settled in the Belgian tent for some Bitburger. The crowd was lively and the band was half decent. Little did we know what a treat we were in for.

After a few performers, this burly looking Chinese man came up on stage holding two butchers knives, two cucumbers, and an oddly shaped piece of metal. Now, of course I was waiting for the Siamese-twin midgets to show up, thus filling all requisites for the world's strangest performance piece, but alas there were none. Not knowing what to expect, we watched as he sliced and diced the cucumbers in midair to prove that, yes indeed, what he was about to do would surely get you admitted to most mental hospitals.

He used the funny shaped peice of metal as a vise to hold the two knives blade upwards on the ground. The then had a fat Chinese man climb onto his back, and then proceeded to carefully STEP ONTO THE KNIVES!! What a sight! A Chinese guy standing on two butchers knives with another on his back, whilst singing kareoke and ganbei-ing beer with the crowd that was now going pretty crazy.

The fat dude crawled off his back, and the singer jumped from the knives to the nearest table where people were eating and drinking. His performance would have gotten any crowd going due to his extreme enthusiasm, but they went absolutely nuts when he poured a pitcher of beer over his head, tore off his shirt Hogan-style, and started smashing everyone's dinner plate on his head!

By now, all 200 Chinese people in the beer tent had realized that there were foreigners amoung them, and I was being ganbei-ed every 30 seconds with pints of Belgian beer. I made more single-serving Chinese friends that night (yeah, just watched Fight Club) than I could count.

By far the strangest part of the evening was when a father pushed his 7 year old daughter up to me. Holding a 1/4 filled pint glass in her hand, she proudly proclaimed, "Ni hao! Ganbei, woda laowei pengyou!" It took me a few seconds to register the fact that a 7 year old girl was ganbei-ing with me (they have not drinking age in China), look up at the father with a "are you f-ing serious look", realize he was, and then chug Belgian pijiu with an elementary school girl.

And boy could she chug... I've got three words for that girl: Future KTV girl.

12. And some advice on the event

A festival in honor of the nectar of the gods, beer. How great is that?

Every summer Qingdao hosts the Beer Festival. As someone who has attended many of them, I can honestly tell you it's a damn good time. If you are a serious drinker or a casual weekend enthusiast, you'll see the best of China's beer drinking culture at the event.

Picture huge tables filled with beer-swilling, elated Chinese. Beautiful women performing on stage. Music of all kinds is featured at the numerous stage venues. There's tons of food, both Chinese and Western, to gorge on when you get the munchies.

As a foreigner, you'll be swamped with offers of free beers to "ganbai." I've gone to the beer festival in the past and not had to buy a single beer. The Chinese are so generous and kind, they are happy to show foreigners a good time. This is a chance to see the Chinese at their best. I've seen only a couple of fights all the times I've been there, and that's pretty amazing considering the amount of drinking that's going on. If you put that many Canadians or Americans together, there would be some trouble. If karaoke is your thing, you can test your singing skills in front of huge crowds, and even buy a cd recording of your song if you so desire.

There's a large variety of beer to sample, from all over Asia and Europe, as well as our well known North American brands.

The many performances are sometimes hilarious, such as the beer drinking competition. Who can chug a bottle of Qingdao beer the fastest? You'd be surprised that often times it's the ladies who excel at this admirable skill.

How good is the Qingdao Beer Festival? I'm living in Southern China right now, and I'm taking a special trip up to Qingdao to make sure I'm there for the fourth year in a row. Take it from a professional drinker, you'll have a good time!

Notes:
The motto for the Qingdao International Beer Festival reads: "Qingdao 'Ganbei' with the World!", indicating the spirit of the event. The first Beer Festival took place back in 1991 and is now held once a year on the second weekend of August, lasting for 16 days. Qingdao is the largest beer production base in China and the Beer Festival provides a great opportunity to show-off the city's distinctiveness. While the 195-year old Munich Oktoberfest primarily focuses on local breweries, the Qingdao International Beer Festival is open to both Chinese and foreign brew masters. More than 100 beer brands from all over the world have successfully participated at the event over the past decades.

The festival begins with the opening ceremony, followed by 16 days of beer tasting, evening entertainment and drinking competitions, concluding with the final ceremony. The Qingdao International Beer Festival is now a nationally recognized event, and successfully combines together aspects of tourism, culture and sport, while also playing a valuable role in promoting the economic interests of the city. As one of the most important international festivals in China, it has a worldwide reputation that attracts millions of people who take part every year. In April of 2006 the Qingdao International Beer Festival was celebrated as the No.1 'Top Ten Festival in China' in the category of 'Exhibition and Conference Annual Meeting of China.'

Love Qingtao beer
When I visited, China I thought Qingtao beer was one of the best beers China had to offer. Unfortunately, it was hard to find, and I definitely have not been able to find it in Los Angeles. If you know where I could find it, post the information. I guess I need to visit the beer festival.
