It lasted for less than a year, and for less than 12 months served as possibly the only foreign-owned and occupied bar in Lijiang Old Town.

But now, after some drama, Sexy Tractor bar is no more, and John, the Irishman who set it up, is leaving town. On his bike.

The bar, situated on a minor lane populated by shops, was possibly the least Irish Irish bar in the world. Apart from the Irish flag added half way through its life, there were few signs it was in that special category of Irish pub. Apart from John that is.

And as a representative of Ireland, John, hailing from County Cork, was not the Emerald Isle's great export because he didn't like Guinness and he frequently ran out of the black stuff the glass bottle seating area
the glass bottle seating area
. The bar, the only one in the old town of hundreds of bars and cafes with a foreign face, didn't always capitalise on its status in this tourist town.

But there was someone pleasing about the bar, its student-flat feel, the single menu, the possibility the proprieter was watching a DVD or more cut than any punter.

So it was sad to see its passing the other week, in unpleasant circumstances involving an ex-girlfriend, the police, and a late night exit from the two-story building.

Rather than having customers drink the pub dry, John managed to reduce his alcohol stocks in the following days. He's fed up, has packed up, and is taking his fittings to Dali to sell. And then there's talk of cycling through Laos and to who knows where.

The mural painted by Tim and Jude still stands on the wall I think. The plans to have tractor racing are still in the air.

John, may the road rise up to meet you, may the sun always be on your back, etc.

A new bar
Well, I tried cycling for a few days, got as far as Dali. Kind of decided that, I have found something I like doing for a living and a beautiful place to do it in so why should I give up so easily.
I found a new place up the street, high up with views overlooking the beautiful buildings of old town Lijiang. Builders started today and its going to be awesome, but I need a name. The old bar has been turned into a resturant like all the others in Lijiang with Chinese staff and no sole, so Im told as I havent been in Still using the old name so Im am in need of a new one,,,, Any ideas ???

The real story of Lijiang's Sexy Tractor bar
Lately lots of rumours have been spread about the Sexy Tractor bar in Lijiang. All of these come from John, an Irish guy who used to be in this bar and is now running Stone The Crows. And all stories are a product of his own imagination.

This is what really happened:

In October 2006 John and his partner at the time Eva started the Sexy Tractor bar. A catchy name, proposed by Naxi-girl Eva and initially rejected by John. Only after other people told him how great this name was, he adopted it as if it was his own. Just like he regarded the whole bar as his own, though Eva was not only the formal owner, but also the one who arranged everything to realize their common dream.

Almost from the very beginning things went differently than what John and Eva had agreed upon beforehand. He put all the revenues of the bar into his own pocket, while she had to work elsewhere during daytime to support her family. And pretty soon most of the bar's earnings were used for John's own alcohol and drug consumption, which made him behave irrationally and violently.

Things ran seriously out of hand, but Eva kept accepting everything that happened, still going for their relationship. Only after John molested her in April 2007 she decided that this situation could not be continued. Together they made another agreement: John could stay in the bar until September, benefiting from the peak season, and he would pay Eva a (really!) small compensation for all the work that she had done in the past half year. The amount was even much less than her own investment in the bar, but Eva decided to take her loss, wanting to leave this dark episode of her life behind her as quickly as possible.

Actually, at that time both John and Eva preferred to have the lease contract for the bar transferred to him, so that he could continue running it independently and she could leave. However, the owners of the building refused this due to John's unpredictable behaviour. They only wanted to go on with Eva, whom they trusted completely because of the good contact with her and her family's clean name and good reputation. Even so much that they turned down higher bids from other parties who wanted to start their businesses at this location.

When September arrived John also broke this agreement, saying he was supposed to stay until the 14th of October. Eva did not want to have any more trouble with him and gave him this extra time. But when she came to the bar on that day, John, again, refused to leave. The issue had to be solved at the local police station, where John got a serious warning for the drugs that were found in the bar (absolutely no joke in China!). Having a reputation of violence, he also had to leave his passport behind to guarantee that he would leave the bar peacefully. He could take everything inside with him, but shouldn't damage the building.

Now John has started a new bar with a new girlfriend, while Eva enlarged and renovated the Sexy Tractor. Seemingly an 'all good that ends good' story. But unfortunately it's not. Instead of just promoting his own place John feels the urge to slander the Sexy Tractor and Eva personally by telling lies, making people believe that he is a poor westerner whose money got stolen by a Chinese girl.

The true story, however, is that he himself first took her money and then left a trail of unpaid telephone, water, electricity and delivery bills for the time when he was running the bar alone. He never even paid any taxes or other government charges. Altogether he left Eva, the formal owner and thus responsible for everything, with payments due for much more than what she received during the first year of the Sexy Tractor. John just put all the revenues of this successful year into his own pocket, as well as Eva's investment.

Up to now Eva always decided to keep this story to herself, remembering how they had once loved each other. But being a local girl from a very respectable Naxi family she cannot accept that her name is discredited by the man who already hurt her emotionally, physically and financially. So after long considerations she decided to open the book and reveal the true story of the Sexy Tractor. Which is rather different from what John is telling everyone......

To support this story Eva has piles of proof, showing clearly what kind of person this friendly looking guy really is. Not a victim, but an habitual liar who abuses other people's trust in mankind, especially that of the woman who loved him and worked towards a bright future with him. A woman who, despite of everything, decided to bear her pain silently, not wanting to harm her former boyfriend.

In Naxi culture a family's reputation is as important as their existence. So after all John's attempts to ruin her life and defame her and her family, Eva had no choice but to stand up and protect herself and her relatives. It is something she was reluctant to do, not wanting to talk in a bad way about anyone, even the man who brought her so much misery and pain. And still Eva doesn't want to harm John or his business, believing that it is possible to have both his and her bar existing close to each other. She wants to forgive and forget, focus on her own business, wishing that John can also start focussing on his new bar and his own future.

Eva doesn't feel good at all to bother you, a traveller who is looking for joyful experiences and a pleasant time in Lijiang, with this story. But it is the only thing she could do to clear her name. And Eva doesn't stand alone: westerners who live in Lijiang know what happened and have made up their own minds about the recent developments. They decided it has become time to stand up for justice and support this lovely Naxi woman and her home-like bar. Resulting in this open letter to you.

Thank you for your attention and have a great time in beautiful Lijiang!

Dear Eric
thank you for your kind words, this repy is to you as there are many thing you obviously are missinformed about. I cant blame you really, Im sure you are being strung along by sex and lies just as I was for three long years. I dont think this kind of slander is good for either of us but if you want to do it, Im game.
The name, came about during a conversation between us, we were bouncing names off each other, and it came from the T-shirt I got in Shanghai, Im sure you know this as the t-shirt was stolen by Eva along with my ice bags (why steal ice bags, my god) and documents and recipts from my labtop bag while the police were there.
I tell the truth, lies are too difficult to remember, Eva, lied to me from the begining, it started with little lies like 'Im not married', what kind of person waits two years into a relationship, after I asked her to marry me before she told me she has a husband and daughter?, the best lie though was 'you cant rent the bar in your own name'.
I dont know if you believe me or not and really, I dont care but, SHE DID NOT INVEST ANY MONEY IN THE BAR IN THE TIME I HAD IT. this is important, hense the capitals, she did work therein the first four months, not regularly, but quite often, she wouldnt let me pay me as she didnt want to be 'my worker'. After some time when things turned bad she changed her mind on this and twice I gave her 1,500. There is also the matter of 13,500 which she convinced me to put in a company bank account, she kept the book and I had the number, she said that was safe, I suppose now, the number is pretty meaningless. I have considered taking her to court for this money, it would be a good way to bring out the truth in this situation as she has been telling people I left her with nothing but bills. Another lie that bother me is that I beat her (you say molested, molested, what the hell do you mean by molested, thats bad man)
I HAVE NEVER HIT A WOMAN IN MY LIFE or a man hard enough to do any damage for that matter but if you treaten me on the street again you could be the first.
I have already written this in a police statement, YOUR WONDERFUL GIRLFRIEND CAME AT ME WITH A KNIFE AND I BRUISED HER WRIST TAKING IT OFF HER, THIS IS NOT BEATING SOMEONE AND I DOUDT IT WOULD BE MOLESTING EITHER. She went to the hospital and police proudly displaying this bruise. why would she do this?, why would she grab a knife to use against me?, she must have been in fear of her life, ah no, she could have left. the arguement that day (it amazed me how she found something new everyday) was about me using the bars milk in my tea, I shit you not, using up the profits in the buisness I financed independently and operated to support both our lifes.
I have been told since that a local forigner who was at the opening night of the bar said to another local forigner 'that bitch, she has no interest in him, she just wants the bar' he also told me lately that she was sending him messages trying to pick him up while we were still together but that he didnt get together with her. However tis particuler forigner isnt exactly Lijiangs most upstanding citizen and I wouldnt believe a word of it.
Despite everything I dont think she ever cheated on me, is more likely he was sending her messages and this is his way of covering it.
Right, what else, Drugs, Drugs are good, you do make me sound like a heroin addict though, Im not, I smoke weed and I make the best ganga cookies this side of your home country, I was boiling up a batch the day the cops came, they wouldnt have known if she hadnt told them what it was, she kept shouting Dama, Dama at them. Thats fucking low man, the rent was up the next day, I was going anyway.
I didnt squander the profits on drugs you lier, Grass grows wild and free in this part of the world and if you werent such a dry-balls you would know that. She alienated most of the forigners who live here grassing me in to the cops on that and then she bared the only one that was left on her side. What the fuck ??

Anyway, I sick of typing, bottom line is she spent half a year trying to push me out of my bar, kept me up fighting till six in the morning, throwing things at me, constantly telling me to get out. She brought the Mafia (childhood friends apparently), police and her family in to force me out but because I am a stuborn bastard, I stayed and when she gave up and I was left alone I had the best six months of my life running that place, I also never saw a water, tax or electricity bill in that time, for the first month I though the electricity would be turned off at any time like she did my internet but it didnt. She had the 13,500 RMB in the bank so I didnt feel guilty about it as taxs, water and electricity together is no more that 200 RMB a month.
Anyway, I regret staying with her for so long, I guess I lived in hope that things would get better but they only got worse.
Life is great now, My new bar has an amazing location, unique in Lijiang which is a town unique in the world, and an awesome girlfriend who I love to bits and may marry if she learns to cook !!!
This is my home and life is great here, you should enjoy it too and leave the past in the past.
Its a pity ye didnt come up with a new name for the bar, running off the reputation I spent a year building up is dishonest and I wonder how this makes you feel.
Thanks for this chance to tell you these things, maybe it might help you in the future. Be wise man.

This is the truth, I swear it on my life.
If this makes you angry, we could meet at sunset in sifang square and battle it out with swords like samari. That would scare the tourists, thats for sure.
yours sincerly

sexy tractor is dead, long live stone the crow
Dear Eric

I don`t know what local foreigners you say are on Eva`s side, because most of the local foreigners are most nights at johns bar drinking really good drinks and enjoying a real foreigner bar.

I used to be a fan of the tractor, and is really sad what you have turned into, another souless chinese place, with no bar man only xiao mei meis, who probably doent even speak english and probably have not a clue how to make a mojito or a white russian.

and your happy, touchy feely messages on the board, are sappy enough to make people puke.

and you sank to new lows now serving hot pot, i think you should stop pretending its a foreigner bar take out the name, (wich i find so hard to believe it was a evas idea), you should also probably stop pretending you have your own opinion and you are not pussy wipped and controled by a naxi woman.

by the way that is not meant as an offence, i am also pussy wipped and controled by a naxi.

i just hope she doest turn into a complete b...., like certain naxi that now owns a certain bar and has a certain westerner boyfriend who writes stupid shit online.

i was there the day she came with the police, and dude that shit should not be done, that was low, that alone makes her, well the word i just implied above in my book.

yes she really didnt want to hurt john, bringing in the fucking police in like a fucking lethal weapon movie, when the poor dude had a hang over.

in the short time i have meet john, i know he is a exellent bartender and and even better friend, his bar used to be the best one in old town by his effort alone, not any one elses.

and guess what now man, his new bar is becoming the new best bar in old town, wich shows that name or location means nothing, and as you probably know by now, the people you are getting go to your place, got here because they heard of the bar when john was running it.

and john may be irrasional but definitly not violent, in fact, he often gets taken advantage off because he is such a sapp..er good guy.

and i know the horror stories so common in this town of the foreigner who falls in love with a local girl and go to buiss together only to end up on the street, in one case even death.

maybe you should pay attention to those stories too, believe me naxi girls are no saints, and no strangers to the art of manipulate, use and control men.

again i have a naxi girl myself, so i say it with love.

i hope the day of reconing doest come from you as it did to john..........actually i hope it does, and then we can all laugh at you on the this forum.

and if you plan to make trouble for my man john, know very well he has his back covered.

so zai jian and good luck, and sleep with one eye open, you may wake up o the street with no money....or in jail.

have fun, man and light up a little
