From China Daily, news of people being killed and injured on Meili Snow mountain during the busy May golden week:

THE death toll from Wednesday's avalanche in remote and mountainous southwest China has risen to two.

And in a tragic twist of fate the victims were a married couple.

A woman plucked from the debris by rescuers died in an ambulance yesterday morning. Her husband was killed instantly, while six others were injured in the avalanche at Meili Snow Mountain in Yunnan Province.

The dead woman was Xu Ya, 33, from east Jiangsu Province, said Zhaxi Toinzhub, head of Deqen County, last night. Her husband was aged about 30.

Five of the injured victims were reportedly in a stable condition. But one, a woman from Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, is believed to be seriously injured.

They were transferred to a county-level hospital yesterday afternoon, according to local officials.

The avalanche occurred about 3pm on Wednesday on the mountain, about 10 kilometers northeast of Deqen County in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Deqen.

Almost 700 people, including police officers, soldiers, medical workers and tourism officials, were engaged in the rescue operation.

As there is no road to the scene, rescuers had to carry the victims to a village about two hours' walk away for temporary medical treatment.

They took another five hours to carry them from the village to the main highway, where they were met by ambulances.

Zhaxi said no one was missing. However, local media reported yesterday that the exact number of victims might not be known as more than 10 tourists were hiking along the mountain when the avalanche happened.

According to Spring City Evening, a local newspaper, the dead man and his wife were from Nantong. He is believed to have died of suffocation after being buried in snow.

"We were ascending when suddenly I heard a loud sound overhead," a man who survived unhurt told the newspaper. "In no time I saw huge quantities of snow sweeping toward me.

"I saw other tourists, who were buried head-first."

And this from Xinhua news agency:

Avalanche Kills 1 Tourist, Injures 7 in Yunnan Adjust font size: printResizeButton();  ZoomIn ZoomOut An avalanche killed one tourist and injured another seven, including two seriously, in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday afternoon, said a local official.

The avalanche occurred at about 3:00 PM on Wednesday in a scenic spot of the Meili Snow Mountain, about 10 km northeast of Deqen County in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Deqen in Yunnan, said Tashi Toinzhub, head of the Deqen County.

Rescuers had to first carried the injured people to a village about two hours' walk from the scenic spot to receive medical treatment, because there is no highway linking the spot with the county seat, he said.

No one is missing in the accident, he said.

More than 300 people, including police officers, armed soldiers, medical workers and tourist officials, have been mobilized for the rescue operation, he said.

Meili Snow Mountain, about 800 km northwest of the Yunnan provincial capital of Kunming, is a well-known scenic spot that separates Yunnan from Tibet.

It has 13 peaks whose average altitudes all exceed 6,000 meters, with the highest reaching 6,740 meters.

DEQIN, Yunnan: A woman died in an ambulance yesterday morning after being rescued from an avalanche that killed one male tourist and injured six others in Southwest China's Yunnan Province. The 33-year-old woman named Xu Ya was from East China's Jiangsu Province. The identity of the dead man is still unknown, Zhaxi Toinzhub, head of the Deqin County, said yesterday evening. The six injured are described as being in stable condition and were expected to arrive at Shangri-la late yesterday, when it will be decided whether to treat them there or fly them to provincial capital Kunming. The avalanche occurred at about 3:00 pm on Wednesday on Meili Snow Mountain, about 10 km northeast of Deqin County in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Deqin. Almost 700 people, including police officers, armed soldiers, medical workers and tourism officials, have been engaged in the rescue operation. Meili Snow Mountain, about 800 km northwest of Kunming, is a popular scenic spot on the boundary of Yunnan and the Tibet Autonomous Region. Xinhua
