If you are planning on visiting China in 2009, the best place to get a tourist or L visa is in your own country.
Get it via the consulate or through a travel agent. Include your itinerary to ensure you get as long as you like.
But what if you are already on the road? Or in Asia?
Then try some of the gateway countries to get your visa. Currently Thailand is one of the easier places to get your visa, along with Laos.
Hong Kong is still the place to get your China visa quickly, but this year it has been more difficult to get longer entries or double entry visas.
Most embassies and consulates require you to have an entry stamp for that country and also to visit in person the issuing office. There are ways around the second requirement - use an agent - but not the first.
Shop around, as if you have two passports, it might be possible to send one away to get a China visa while you are traveling on the other passport.
