Our scooter hire place sold us a taxi
ride to Ubud and like most taxis we've got since being away, there
was someone coming along for the ride or to practice English. Eric
was a nice guy and always laughing so it made the journey go a lot
quicker 1

. Like lots of Balinese people he had some awesome tattoos
too. We got dropped off in the center of town and this time han took
off in search of accommodation while I lounged in a cafe. It was
pretty busy so took a while but eventually found a nice-ish losmen
next to a rice field. That afternoon we took a look around the town
and found that it's a pretty busy town with lots of art and tourist
tack shops and its got a forest full of monkeys at the end of....wait
for it.....monkey forest road. The monkeys are supposed to be holy
and theres a temple within the 'monkey' forest. For 15,000 you could
even but some bananas to feed to holy monkeys but we passed. Some
people though were teasing the monkeys and letting them climb all
over them – crazy behavior in our opinion – aren't monkeys meant
to be disease ridden?

That night our nice-ish losmen turned
out not to be so nice. When we got back after dinner there was this
big lizard on our wall and when we put the lights out the scratching
and running started 2

. We were pretty certain it was the lizard but
then something started running inside the room on top of the wall,
scurrying and scratching again. Han got her ear plugs and I started
to think of my happy place – great nights sleep.

The next day we got out into the
countryside which Ubud is known for a walked. We walked farther that
day than we've ever walked. Actually, I'd go as far as saying we
walked farther than anyone has every walked in one day. Beautiful
countryside and we passed by loads of little kids who were shouting
'hello mister' and things like that and it made you feel like you'd
managed to get off the well beaten track a little bit. That night was
a right-off as our legs wouldn't work. We just about managed to book
some transport towards the Gili Islands, which we were leaving for
the following morning – bright and early.
