Day 14 - September 30The barking of sea lions called to us as we climbed the first hill right out of the park this morning. We stopped to watch them from a cliff over top of the rock they were resting on. We couldn't believe how many of them there were or how loud they were. We also went through our second and last tunnel of the tour and pedaled as fast as we could so we didn't get trapped in there with any trucks. Soon 101 headed inland and we couldn't see the ocean, the ride was very boring compared to what we saw yesterday.
We have discovered Fred Meyer: the super-mega department store of the north west. Think Wal-mart and multiply it by 100. It's amazing: It's like a Wegman's, a JC Penny, a gas station, a cafe, and a jewler all in one. We stocked up on food and pigged out in the parking lot.
The only exciting part of the ride was the sand dunes we rode along. Brian tricked me into thinking that he wanted to check them out so he could take some pictures, but soon I discovered that it was really only because he wanted to test out his survival skills and pretend to be Bear Grylls, as he hopped down the dunes to the bottom. We climbed the dunes three times so we could hop down them. It was hard to pull ourselves away to finish the last twenty miles of the day. Soon I also discovered that three times was probably a bad idea - since my legs were burning within the next mile of riding...but it was so much fun.
We discovered the Reedsport Coffee House since the Library seems out of the way. We're headed to the State Park to set up camp and we're both pretty tired after today. We're hoping to check out the lighthouse at the state park. That should be cool and we should get there in plenty of time.
