Hola! So, here we are in the capital of Costa Rica: taking it all in; soaking it all up. The past 48 hours since we landed in San Jose have been something of a blur, unsurprising since they have mostly been spent trying to recover from the 24 hour journey, while also trying to make sense of this exciting, frenetic new city. One minute tearing out of Silverton with moments to spare for the train to Gatwick, the next sitting in my new home while the rain lashes down outside. But, in summary: so far, so good. Already we've learned that it's true that the Ticos are genuinely welcoming and friendly; already we've eaten delicious fresh tropical fruits, and the rice and beans that will become our staple meal; and already we've learned that once every six years or so Costa Rica has an exceptionally wet rainy season. And guess what...

The rain is fierce. It comes down like a power shower, starting at 3.30 pm and continuing all evening. I haven't yet figured out what you're meant to do in the afternoons, but the mornings are divine. The sky is blue and the sun is just hot enough for my 'delicate' complexion, All this rain and sunshine makes San Jose a green city. The stories we heard before arriving were mostly bad, and I suppose if you are here to make a holiday then, no, you wouldn't linger, but I think the place has a deal of charm. Traffic aside. The main roads are insane - caught in the torrents of rain yesterday it took us 20 minutes to brave it across eight lanes of speeding traffic - but I think we can avoid the worst.

What else? No one tries to speak English to us, which is excellent but so far I'm frustrated that I meet most people with a blank look. The intensive Spanish course starts on Monday, so in a few weeks I hope to report a different story!

No photos yet... we've just been taking it in with our eyes so far... but will upload soon. We plan to hire a car and head to the coast next weekend for a holiday (before work and study begins on 17th September) so will bring stories and pics of real Costa Rica back from that trip.

Our love to everyone at home reading this. I miss people very much, but know that I'll get used to being here, and you'll get used to me not being there, very soon.
