Kerry's House - Les Petit Four
First week of class went well, lots to do this term. Papers to write, site visits to the UN, WTO and International Red Cross, and a little Humanitarian conference to plan with the UN. Definitely going to be busy. But first, WINE!
First weekend in Geneva was actually spent in Burgundy, France where we stayed in Kerry’s house there. 3 whole days of wine tasting and touring, absolutely great. Some people in my group know there was a weekend, but I think some of the details are fuzzy or missing. I, on the other hand, recall everything that happened and even have some of it on video for posterity sake
We visited 4 wineries and bought LOTS of wine. Winery #1 on Friday afternoon was a small one, where the locals in the village all send their grapes and that is made into the giant barrels of wine. Then the locals get their wine by the liter from the winery. They just role up with their cask that they keep in their house and fill it up at the taps, sort of like filling a gas tank, and the wine is cheaper then petrol. Wine was about 1.17-euro per liter, about $1.64, and about $16 for 10 liters!! We can add Burgundy to the list of areas I would okay living. We tasted 1 white, 1 rose and 3 reds here and I bought a bottle of Rully that I’m told would retail in the states for about $80-$90. I paid $12.
Friday night Kerry made us cheese fondue, which was drunk with lots of wine, because the wine helps you digest the cheese and not get all…um…“bound up.” I know most of us are used to the bread in the cheese, but the traditional way is bread, slices of cured meat (we had beef), baby sour pickles and pickled onions. The BEST way is a pickle, wrapped in meat, spear a piece of bread and dip in the cheese
Saturday we got a bit of a late start heading over to one of the little villages for their market (gee, go figure). We strolled around an adorable and very French town, the name of which I never caught, and looked at the produce and meats in the market. Then it was a quick lunch and a stop for candy before it was off to Winery #2. This Winery was a large, more industrial winery with lots more to choose from. We sampled a lot of wines here, and I lost count, but I know we tried several whites and red, a rose, a rose Champaign (Sparkling Wine), several fruit wines/liqueurs and then several of the fruit wines/ liqueurs mixed into the white wine and the white sparkling wine. Kerry had given us the Raspberry fruit wine to try Friday night and we all loved it, so everyone got a bottle. It was delicious, like a 1000 raspberries exploding in your mouth. Afterwards it was down the road about 5 minutes to Winery #3, a very small, family-owned winery where they make wines in the old-fashioned method. They only bottle about 20,000 a year, so pretty small operation. The winery and vineyards have been passed down on the mother’s side for 10 generations
We returned to the house Saturday night and while Kerry cooked us dinner (he refused to let us do anything) we all crashed in the living room in front of the TV and veg-ed out for several hours. Dinner was good, ol’ fashioned, American, with a little French twist. Kerry made meatloaf, but he put cheese in it. I know right!!! Cheese AND meat, baked together. We also had baked potatoes, green beans and salad, so good. Saturday night we didn’t do nearly the damage to the wine reserves as Friday, barely made it through 8 bottles, and most of us crashed about midnight.
Sunday was another lazy start and we spent the morning piled up in the living room watching Sunday morning British TV shows, before packing up the cars with all our wine and luggage and heading out
So, Burgundy. I love Burgundy, I love coming home from Burgundy with 4 bottles of wine, 2 bottles of fruit wine and a bottle of Champaign and it costing me less than $50.
