Flag of Spain and Canary Islands  , Madrid,
Sunday, April 26, 2009

Alright, I don't have a whole lot to say about Madrid, it was alright. Mostly I just enjoyed the company of some people I met up with at the hostel...
I did end up going to see a bullfight though - that was really interesting! I can't say that I particularly enjoyed it, but I figured that I should go see one since I am in Spain. There were actually quite a decent number of Spainairds there, so it wasn't just a tourist thing like you might think. It was quite cloudy though, so probably not as many people as usual. It is cruel and pointless, but for those of you who might be interested, I have posted the video of one of the fights. I really wish I had recorded the one where one of the cuadrillas (guys that wave the capes) got tossed by the bull, but oh well... It's only fair I guess if you are going to kill the bull anyway, I think he deserves a decent chance at hurting you! [The video is about 17 minutes long, and for about a minute or two towards the beginning I didn't realize that I had turned the camera, so you can just fast-forward through that section if you like.]

If you do go to Madrid, visit the Prado museum! It is a great collection, especially their large El Greco room. I didn't give it enough time because I had to make it over to the bullfight in time across town, but the time I did spend there was great. It is free on Sunday, but get there EARLY to line up to get your free ticket! Also the Reina Sofia museum was nice which I saw the next afternoon. It has Picasso's Guernica, along with some interesting studies that he had done for the piece, so those were nice to see. Other than that, it's mostly modern art that I don't find very interesting...

Here are some other pictures from Madrid taken in Retiro Park, which was really nice. Nothing like that where I live, that's for sure! I could have spent the whole afternoon there, just lazying away the day...

And inside the Atocha train station headed to Barcelona, I got to wait in a nice botanical garden in the center of the station!
