We woke up and the ladies fixed us a nice breakfast in our rooms. We had eggs, toast, fruit, yogurt and juice.
We took the regionale to Varenna, on the eastern shore of Lake Como in the Alps. From this small town we walked down the mountain town to the ferry and took it over to Bellagio, the peninsula town that is only accessible by water. We loaded with a full-sized tour bus and its occupants for the 15 minute ride (it carries vehicles also).
Upon arrival we headed in the general direction of our 2 bedroom apartment, asking directions only once. The owner of the apartment also owns the restaurant outside the apartment and we checked in there and moved our gear into the rooms. It was one of the nicest places we have stayed on our trip.
We then headed out to explore the town. It reminds us of a cross between Siena and Venice. The small, narrow "streets" of Siena, with the "I wonder what will be around this corner" of Venice. The City is basically on a cliff and to walk around you hike up and down the stairs, resting while you window shop or stop in a store. We had another picnic lunch in the apartment with supplies we had bought in Milan, then got some gelato and headed for a park shown on the town map. The adults found a sunny bench and read while the kids played on the playground and found an Italian girl to play "football" with.
We went back to the apartment to rest and clean up before finding a restaurant for dinner around 7:30. The meal was probably the best we have had. The boys and mom had five cheese ravioli and Jen and I shared pasta bolognese and a three meat second course of veal, pork, and beef. The bolognese sauce was awesome and the meats cooked perfectly to melt in our mouths. We had a nice bottle of local wine and even found room for dessert. The boys had creme caramel and chocolate and vanilla crepes. They were both good (I stole a bite of each).
The weather was beautiful all day. Just right for short sleeve shirts and pants. We have not worn shorts once this trip, so we are all glad that we brought multiple pairs of pants. It sounds as if this year May has been very wet and cold compared to normal. Though I am not sure we would have wanted it too much warmer except in Florence where the drizzle made it feel colder than it probably was.
We didn't see George. We didn't really care.
