What I did

We woke up and lay around in the tent for a couple of minutes secure and comfortable in the knowledge that we only had a 1 1/2 hour drive to get to the hotel where we were staying for the next two nights. However, as soon as the sun had risen above the trees and began to focus its energy on the tent and us, it quickly grew first warm and then hot. So rather than sticking around and having breakfast, we quickly packed up the tent and car and headed out to find a diner. The lady in the campsite next to us, looked up from her book and said "wow, you guys have done this before, one minute I was looking at your tent, and then when I looked up again two pages later, you guys were jumping in the car." It is certainly true, the set up and break down of camp has become incredibly smooth, efficient and seamless.
We headed out of the campground and using Bob managed to track down a diner called Bertha's in Buffalo, New York. This turned out to be one of the great finds of this trip and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal in this small, local and great smelling restaurant. It's always a good sign when the the waitress replies to your question of; 'how are the waffles?' with; "everything's good here!" and she is proven to be correct.  From here we drove on to Rochester, New York and stopped at Target for the kids to spend the last of their pocket money on this road trip and they each bought some more Lego to add to their collections. When we rang the hotel, the rooms were ready and we were able to check in early, take showers and wait for Gramma to arrive as she was driving up from Connecticut to see us and attend the family wedding that we had all been invited to. Before we knew it, Gramma was knocking on the door, screams of joy and excitement were heard from all quarters and we had a good catch-up. Then it was time to head out to the airport in order to pick up Uncle Pete who was flying in from Bozeman. That mission completed, we headed to our cousin's house for a pool party the night before the wedding.
This was fantastic for a couple of reasons, Jess and the kids had never met this side of the family and Tim hadn't seen these cousins and relatives for over 20 years. It is so much fun to hang out with people and family whom you haven't seen for two decades and yet you are swept in, the kids are completely immersed in older cousins and time spent sitting on the porch, eating food, drinking beer and swimming in the pool flashes by. The kids did themselves really proud with their manners and spent some time with their cousins hanging in the kitchen, eating ice cream and delighting their newly discovered family with tales of New Zealand. We had a great night, and around midnight we got the kids out of the pool, into the car and we headed back to the hotel for a well deserved good night's sleep.

Wow bin reading about all your adventures. What an amazing time you guys have been having. You are right those experiences will be with you forever that you can withdraw from in the future. I am sure even tho the kids are young there will be lots of things they will remember in years to come. What a fantastic opportunity they have had. Haven't much news from North Canterbury apart from the fact it has been raining or about three weeks. Enjoy going back at work soon
