Day 2 in Vancouver and a Canyon

What I did
Too soon it was noon and time to pick up Lucas from school. We had decided to stop at the Japanese grocery store and buy some good (and affordable) sushi for a picnic lunch at Lynn Canyon in North Vancouver. The kids picked up packet after packet of sushi and then we were on our way across the bridge towards Lynn Canyon. Despite what the adults thought was an over purchase of sushi, all was cleaned up in record time and we were off to explore the canyon. I think Lily herself was responsible for about 24 pieces of salmon roll. The favourite of the adults was the tempura yam roll (think kumara, Kiwis).
This was a very cool park on the edge of the city and it had a mountain stream thundering 50 or more feet down below the suspension bridge. There is something stunning about being that high up in a pine forest looking down on the river below as it narrows and thunders over short falls, gathers in aqua blue pools and has enough flow and force to generate a steady stream of cold air that flowed down through the canyon and riverbed. Uncle Ben told us that in September it is possible to come and stand on the swing bridge and the other bridges in the park and watch salmon fighting their way upriver and leaping high in the air to negotiate the waterfalls as they strive to reach their spawning grounds. We may have to come back to witness such a sight. After crossing the bridge we walked downstream on the true left of the river for about a mile until we got low enough to walk out on the rocks along the river and spend some classic kid time throwing stones and sticks into the river. We also found that the first of the season's salmonberries were beginning to ripen. There were enough to pick and sample as we played by the river. Salmonberries are large pinky reddish berries that appear to be a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry. Apparently they are a favourite of bears and elk when in season but no such large mammals were sighted by us today.
After our extended outdoor time we cruised back to the house in time to spend some time relaxing in the house and cooking a lovely tea. We had local organic pork sausages, roast potatoes and fresh asparagus. The kids went off to bed and we relaxed and talked over some cocktails. Another great day....
