Last entry had us on the road at 7am and on the way to Washington D.C. We stopped at the first Starbucks we could find for coffee and hot chocolates. We did then stay for about half an hour and take advantage of the free wifi! We updated our blog, had a wee breakfast and headed into D.C. Thanks to 'Bob' it only took about 1 1/2 hours to find a parking garage within walking distance of all of the attractions that we wanted to see. By then, the coffee and hot chocolate had percolated through all of our bodies and it was a quick stop in the closest restaurant to buy a slice of cheese pizza (9:30am!) and use the toilets.
Then we headed out on our walking tour of D.C. First stop was an item high on Lily's wish list of things to see....The White House. They were clearly getting ready for some function as there were multiple vans, trailers and press people getting organised. We thought it was Barack welcoming the Kiwis but decided to take a pass and carry on sightseeing instead. Our special invitation clearly got lost in the mail. KaMate wanted his photo taken with the kids so we obliged. My favourite moment was when he decided to lay down a proper challenge and while peering through the fence outside the White House, he let rip with an impressive Haka!!! No-one came out to accept the challenge so we/he left feeling quite proud of our/himself.
Then it was down to the National Mall to see: The Washington Monument, The Vietnam Memorial Wall, The Lincoln Memorial, and The WWII Memorial. We tried to impress upon the children the significance of what they were seeing and I think that some of it did sink in. They, in particular, commented on all of the names written on the wall of the Vietnam Memorial.
Then we went for a walk down the street and stopped at a street corner for hot dogs and pretzels. It was great to sit on the corner and watch the people go past. We decided to have a treat of ice cream, but they clearly stored them with dry ice as Tim nearly broke a tooth on his tollhouse chocolate chip cookie sandwich and the kids popsicles took 10 minutes before they could lick them without their tongues getting stuck to the ice cream.
Then we walked down the road to the Air and Space Museum which actually had free admission on the day we were visiting. We had to go through a metal detector and the ubiquitous Leatherman that Tim wears did not clear the detector. They were unwilling to hold it/store it for us and so we had to take a risk and stash it in the bushes in front of the museum. It was a great place and the kids walked around in a daze staring at all of the planes and space shuttles and etc....We talked about the Wright brothers and the beginnings of flight. It was a grand place to finish the early day on.
Then we walked back to the car and started driving to Assateague Island and the wild ponies. Along the way Tim got a phone call offering him a job in a boarding school in Westbrook Connecticut. Now we have a place to live and the kids know where they will be going to school!!!! Finally, it has been sorted and the remainder of our year is in place!
We got to Assateague just as the rain started up again and after hearing the flooding advisories on the radio decided to stay in a place called FrontierTown and a little log cabin. As it poured all night long and we dried out and had showers, it seemed like a wonderful decision. More adventures to come!!!
