Nantucket for the summer. I live for the summer, and Nantucket (a.k.a ACK) is a new england beach paradise. Fresh (really really fresh) seafood, beach sunsets and bonfires, lighthouses, and history is what I appreciate most about the island.
That being said, Nantucket is a place of unfair juxtaposition - million dollar cliffside mansions spring up all the time (which is just stupid cause they're gonna end up in the ocean from erosion) and yet many local people struggle to keep their businesses afloat. It is kinda sad that Nantucket has become a place where rich people can spend an extravagant week or two during the summer and then leave (btw, I'm not one of these - my family has a small cottage and I work the whole summer); many people here don't have those luxuries. Unfortunately, the ills extolled on this society of loyal islanders is most apparent in the younger generation. In the last few years, the island high school has experienced a few suicides; and with a small year-round population, a rate much higher than the mainland. I even know a kid who is homeless and lives out of a tent, even during winter. Seriously, what the f*ck! In the midst of so much excess, how do these good but struggling people go unnoticed? The whole thing just sickens me, and I kinda hate going there now because all I see are wealthy execs and their spoiled-rotten kids basking in their own filth.
Its the same sad old story.
