Florida is a pretty big state, and friends are dispersed throughout - I don't know if we'll ever get out of here. The blood is getting thin thanks to the warm weather, although 'warm' is a relative term considering that Mare and I are sitting out on the patio with shorts and t-shirts while our hosts, Pete and Diane, have a fire going inside.

We are in Orlando staying with Mary's second family in a beautiful house on a lake, just a few miles from Disneyworld [ close enough to hear the nightly fireworks ]. Unfortunately, Pete and Diane are in the same boat that many of us are sailing in, thanks to the greedy bastards from the banks and on Wallstreet who put us in this ---- oops! ...hand me the Tao, I'll be alright in a minute. So we're all enjoying the final days in this urban oasis before the bank comes knocking.

Diane's dad and brother [ we just lost her mom a couple months ago ] live around the corner, and we celebrated Mary's birthday together - even though our leap baby didn't really have a birthday this year. We feasted on a fabulous meal prepared by Diane and Michael, which was appropriately topped off by one of Pete's famous 7 layer cakes. Did I mention that Pete and Diane are gourmet cooks ? Entertainment for the evening was provided by Mallery, who was running in the NAIA Track Nationals in Ohio, and the event was broadcast on a live stream. She qualified for the finals running the 400 leg of the Distance Medley, and now we have our very own All American Athlete. I guess if she had 'good' parents they would have been in Ohio to cheer her on. How about next year and the one after that ?

We have made the one hour excursion to Cocoa Beach a few times, where resides yet another of Mary's old classmates from junior high, Maureen, who currently lives with her brother Kevin in a nice place on a golf course, of course, and they don't play, of course, but they are only a long walk or a short bikeride to the beach, which is gearing up for the spring break onslaught. Kevin has worked for years as a bartender and he had some great local gossip and funny stories. They took us down to Cocoanuts Bar on the beach where Kevin had worked, and he related some hilarious stories of getting his ass kicked - once by a lesbian who got ticked off and came behind the bar, hit him in the back of the head and proceeded to stomp him with spiked heels. He said he woke up the next morning with holes in his arms. Then there was the time he got beat up by midgets. The circus was in town and these little people were acrobats out for a little hellraising. One guy got down on his hands and knees so the others could launch off of his back and kick Kevin in the jaw. He said " there were midgets flying all over the place, doing flips over my head", and the bouncer couldn't budge to help him because he was paralyzed with laughter.

Maureen introduced us to another Southern gastronomical delight after a dinner she prepared, shrimp etouffee, that was phenomenal. For dessert we were treated to deep-fried cheesecake, with ice cream of course. Fortunately there is an LA Fitness nearby, although I think I'm losing the battle. I will draw the line at deep fried twinkies !

We are fast coming to the realization that this fantasy journey can't go on for ever and the inevitable need for work has slipped back into the scenario. Mary has also suddenly been faced with a severe hip problem that has necessitated in the use of a walker [ of course, that hasn't slowed her down much - she just left to pick up the kids in Ft. Lauderdale, who are joining us for spring break ]. We are scheduling an MRI for next week - sorry Pete, we'll be here a little longer - and hopefully will be able to have a game plan then. In the mean time I'll just have to continue with my new career - pool boy !

Wow, a mixed bag of news. Mare, I hope the hip situation is easily resolved. Are you sliding through Winter Park just for notalgia's sake? I'm sure it's nothing like it was when you were at Rollins, Bill. And I feel the pain in your friends' home struggles. This is really pissing me off that so many folks at our stage in life have to go through this when we thought we did everything right. On a happier note - YAY for Mallery! And Bill, I love the photo of you looking through the flowers. You look very content. Love, love, love

I believe Midget (from midge, a sand fly[2]) is a term that is widely considered pejorative[3][1][4][5] for a person of unusually short stature (Wikipedia) but the story wouldn't flow as well told as people of unusually short stature.

Wish I could be there with all of you. Love, Jim

and I'm glad you appreciate the retractable screens. It's James Bondesque when they are all activated.
