The Killing Fields

I took another boat ride from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, bigger river and faster boat!
As I had been traveling on this trip I picked up and read a couple of books written by survivors Khmer Rouge regime and was anticipating visiting the killing fields. I went to the prison, S-21, where many people were held before being executed, and then to the killing fields. It amazes me that people my age actually lived through this horror. At the killing fields most of the mass graves have had the large body parts removed. However, there are still a significant amount of human bones lying around. You can also still see pieces of the clothing that the people wore scattered in the piles of bone fragments. The most disturbing moment for me was when at one point when I was walking around the mass graves and was about to put my foot down, another person there with me screamed "look out!" I was about to step on a jaw bone that still had some teeth in it. I can't believe that this happened in my lifetime!
So, on a lighter note, they also have a royal palace here, much like the one in Bangkok, complete with their own Emerald Buddha. I saw another beautiful sunset from my very chilled out hostel, Same Same But Different, recommended by Trixi (she owns the Funky Monkey with her husband Mac in Siem Reap, don't think I mentioned it before, but a very cool place to hang). Sam was an excellent tour guide, thanks for the rec Trixi!
