As my time in India winds down I had to decide what I would do between Cochin and Chennai, where I am flying out. Mysore looked like it was worth a visit, only problem was there was no direct train there. I have gotten quite spoiled traveling in this country on trains, they are so much more comfortable than busses. I decided to suck it up and suffer through an overnight bus to Mysore (would my trip really be complete without a hideously long/overnight bus trip--NO!) I think I made the right choice! As the bus pulled in at 5am we drove past the main attraction here, the Mysore Palce and it was lit up--beautiful!

The first day I did a city tour taking in the zoo and an art gallery (blah), then went up to Chamundi Hill which overlooked the city and had an interesting temple on it and saw a nearby summer palace.

After lunch we went to the palace. This is one of the most colorful palaces I have been in. May have something to do with the fact that is also one of the newest--it burnt down and was rebuilt in 1912. The most remarkable feature were the stained glass ceilings in the ballrooms and reception halls. It has a lovely garden on the outside, but the view from the outside is best after dark.

There is also a very colorful fruit and vegetable market here which also sells vibrantly colored powders and flowers for religious occasions and different flavored sandalwood oils.
