Safari

I did a 5 day trip to Kruger National Park for a safari. We did some sight seeing on the way to the park. If you have ever seen the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, you know the guy went to the edge of the world to throw the bottle off. I stood on the cliff where he did that in the movie, overlooking rainforests. We also saw Blyde River Canyon.
The first night we stayed in a traditional tribal village outside the park. We ate the local food--corn ground to the consistency of flour and then boiled (called mealy pop) served with sauces and meat all eaten with your fingers. That night they performed dances around the fire for us.
I lucked out and picked, in my opinion, the best safari. We were the only group staying in the park which meant we didn't have to be out of the park by dusk like everyone else. It also meant that any animal that felt like it could wander through our camp.
Our guide, Jon, of course told us we would be fine, however one evening when we were sitting around the campfire drinking beer we heard some lions that sounded VERY close. I didn't get worried until our guide started to get excited. When he determined that they were upwind of us and had stopped moving once they smelled us we got in the car to go check them out. Two beautiful male lions just a stones throw from our campsite. They didn't seem to mind us and we had an amazing up close look at them--just a few feet from the car!
The safari was fantastic, we got to see the "big 5" which is buffalo, rhinoeceros, leopard, lion and elephant. We got to see loads of other animals as well. I'll put the pictures here or look at them full size in the photo album.
