I got stuck in Port Moresby for a couple days because as usual I arrived with nothing arranged and I also arrived on a Sunday morning when nothing is open so impossible to make arrangements. At the airport in Manila I met an Aussie expat who had been on holiday in the Philippines but lived in PNG. We got to talking and he was a bit concerned about me wandering around by myself so he took me under his wing. He showed me around Port Moresby and also expressed some concern about my proposed itinerary, which I of course ignored. When I get it in my head I want to go somewhere, barring some freak natural disaster or major terrorist attack, I'm gonna go. Of course I had read info before I went and knew not to walk alone at night, that sort of thing. Plus, I get around, feel like I'm street smart. He gave me some other tips such as having a small wallet with only a small amount of Kina (the local currency) in it to hand over in case I was robbed, a "throw away" wallet. Of course I'm always hiding important things all around in my bags, but never had something specifically designated to give away so I made one of those. I also registered with my embassy-a first. And as a final measure, he insisted I take his cell phone with me to have in case of emergency. I felt like it was overboard, but I was armed and ready to move on.
