Airlie Beach is the jumping off point for sailing trips throughout the Whitsunday Islands, located about an hours flight south of Cairns (10 hours by car), on the east coast of Australia. The Whitsundays are a group of  74 islands just off the east coast. They are beautiful, hilly islands resting in a beautiful turquoise colored water, with hidden coral reefs all about. Great for snorkeling and diving.

Airlie Beach itself is a small, touristy town with one main street and few back streets. Its quite quaint and has a nice lagoon type pool located on the waterfront. The harbor is filled with every possible type of  sailboat, all beautiful.

The big attraction of Airlie Beach is taking a trip out amongst the Whitsunday Islands on a sailboat, usually for a couple of nights. I took a 3 day, 2 night sailing trip on a lovely boat called The Kiana. It had room for 14 people, with 3 crew. What a wonderful time we had. Of course it was pouring down rain as we started off and continued to rain on and off the rest of the trip. But that made us ever so grateful for the bits of sun that we did get. I think we even had one whole day where it hardly rained at all! Woo Hoo!

We had a terrific group of people on the boat, so that helped make things lots of fun. There were folks from Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Ireland and even 3 Yanks (counting myself!). The crew were from Australia, England and Canada. It was great fun learning from one another and laughing with (at?) each othe over terrific food & drinks, scuba diving and island exploring.

I was able to do several dives from the boat. The coral was once again spectacular and there seemed to be more fish and turtles down here than I saw on the dive out of Cairns. The visibility was somewhat limited due to the weather, but it was all beautiful. We also did some nice beach walks and little bush hikes on some of the islands.

One of the best things was actually sleeping out on the water, with the gentle rocking of the boat at night. My little sleeping berth had a small porthole located right by my head and the breeze was lovely. You could even look at at the stars, which was great because that meant a clear sky!

All in all, it was a great experience.
