The first day in Hawaii seemed like the day that lasted forever......
I got up at 4:30am after failing to convince my body that I was no longer on Eastern time. I sat on the lanai and watched the sun rise over Honolulu until Diane got up at 6:30am...... yes, you read that right.... 6:30am.......
The Hilton Hawaiian Village resort itself is beautiful and HUGE..... 5 or 6 hotel towers, 18 restaurants and bars, 3 or 4 free-form pools... you get the idea. Our room is on the 27th floor of the Rainbow tower, looking down Waikiki Beach towards the Diamond Head crater.
Unable to sleep, we located the HHonors VIP lounge where they serve a free continental breakfast on a terrace overlooking the lagoon and have the free wireless access I'm using to write this.....
We walked back through the city and Diane did some souvenir shopping. After that we made a quick trip to Walmart to load up on snacks and drinks for the room. Yeah, yeah, I know... "You went to Walmart in Hawaii???????" The resort is VERY expensive, almost ridiculously so... I don't think of myself as cheap, but at $7.00 USD for a Bud Light, $10 for a hot dog and $14.50 for a cheeseburger, I could go broke pretty quick. We also bought a nice big beach blanket to save ourselves the $17 per day beach chair charge (each!).....
The rest of the day was spent relaxing on the beach and at the pool, a quick nap for Diane while I sat on the balcony and then dinner at Chili's in Waikiki at which point our jetlagged bodies were ready to crash.....

Sunrise
. Then we oriented ourselves to the Waikiki area by walking down the beach as far as the Duke Kahanamoku statue in central Waikiki. Most of the resorts we past had beautiful beachfront restaurants decked out for Mother's Day brunches. Although it wasn't even 9:00am, the sun was intense and the beach was starting to fill up with sunbathers, joggers and surfers. We walked back through the city and Diane did some souvenir shopping.
