Thursday 16th

We didnt have huge expectations of Ushuaia and we weren't let down!!! It has a certain end of the world, back end of nowhere charm about it. Part functional and slightly bleak, part exciting as lots of people are just about to head off to or have just returned from a trip of a life time to Antarctica. The main street is rather dull and contains lots of outdoor shops, electrical stores, cafes and restaurants. All aimed at the tourist, all pretty expensive for what they are offering and nothing to get too excited about.

During the afternoon we visited the towns main museum, which was quite interesting. It told the story of; the Yamana indigenous people who were slowly wiped out by Europeans due to disease, how the town was developed as a penal colony and also stories of it's most notable convicts. Quite well done for a small town museum and a good way to kill a couple of hours. Chilled out for the rest of the afternoon and then had a nice dinner at Patagonia Pleasures and a few bottles of the local ale which was really good.

Friday 17th
Had a great day hiking in Parque National Tierra Del Fuego. Literally 4 seasons in one day with it often hailing and being sunny at the same time. We set sail for 11 days in Antarctica tomorrow and not really sure what to expect, apart from ice, snow and penguins.

Saturday 18th
We met up for lunch with Carol and Ralph who we met on the Empanada cooking course in BA and were also about to set sail for Antarctica, abliet on a different boat. We were all very excited and wondered what the next 11 days would have in stall for us all.
