Walcott Hotel

A mere one hour flight from Toronto and I landed at La Guardia Airport in New York. The approach involved flying over mid Manhattan and then turning to pass over the southern end of the island and Ground Zero before turning twice more and landind.
The Walcott Hotel is a small 106 year old hotel on 31st Street. For a mid town hotel it is remarkably cheap and comfortable. On Friday evening I took a walk up 5th Avenue before cutting across 42nd Street to Times Square. It was bitterly cold but as always crowded with people taking in the colourful billboards most of which these days are huge screens. It was a bit off putting to see a vast picture of Piers Morgan in Times Square....almost as big as his ego ...but not quite. I bought a ticket to see Billy Elliot on Saturday night and enjoyed a shrimp meal at Bubba Gump's on the Square.
On Saturday morning I set out to walk up to 79th Street and Broadway where a really interesting Deli and kitchenware shop called Zabars is located. I don't believe in "Retail Therapy" but Zabars is my king of shop. My walk later took in Central Park, Madison Avenue, Grand Central Station and the Chrysler Building before my feet started hurting and I wandered back to the hotel for a break.
