We had to set alarms to make sure we were up by 8am. A bit sad, I know. We had packed the previous evening so all we had to do was get up get dressed and strip our beds, go down for one last Celica breakfast and then check out.
We rolled out luggage the 300 metres back to the station, found our platform with ages to spare, found our carriage and then found our seats. We kicked out the people who had made themselves comfortable in our reserved seats and hoisted out cases up onto the luggage racks. We settled in for the 12 hour journey. The first part of the journey was pretty slow but after a while we were into the Julian Alps of Slovenia. We went through the border checkpoint at Austria and then we were in the Austrian Alps. The mountains around us began to take on awesome proportions and the snow got deeper and deeper. We passed pretty mountain villages that were neck deep in snow and pine forests laden with a frosty covering. It was all new for me and beautiful.
At lunch time we headed down to the restaurant car and tried to order some lunch. Unfortunately most of the things we ordered were not available so we ended up having soup. It was nice soup though. Back to the compartment for some more view gazing, gameboy playing, iPod listening and lots of reading. As usual in close quarters tempers got a bit strained. We passed another border checkpoint and we were in the Czech Republic. Dinner was a repeat of lunch and then back to our compartment. We arrived into Prague as expected at 9.55pm. I had arranged for a car to pick us up - a luxury I normally wouldn't bother with but given the lateness of the hour and the chill of the night I thought it would be a good idea. The driver turned up a few minutes late causing only momentary panic. We drove through the streets of Prague and I noticed how grand it all looks. Despite how late it was the streets were still crawling with people. We met our host Emil and he showed us to our palace of an apartment. It's right in the middle of the action, perhaps 1 minute from the Old Town Square which is full of amazing buildings. The apartment itself is huge and had everything we need for a great stay. I couldn't resist going out for a walk. It was after 11 by now but I was itching to see the sights. I walked to the square then up and down some side streets and ended back at our apartment to find everyone in bed.
