The Singapore Zoo... at last

Ever since we have been coming to Singapore I have had a visit to the zoo on the agenda. This time we made it.

The day started in a promising way, with our favourite buffet breakfast. It has become something of a family tradition when visiting Singapore to stay at the Swissotel Merchant Court and gorge ourselves on the buffet. This time was no exception. We noted that the hotel was offering a high tea for only $10 in the afternoon so we booked in for that too, figuring we could forgo lunch and dinner.

Singapore zoo is as much a lush tropical garden as a zoo. You could happily wander around just enjoying the many tropical plants and flowers. The first animal we came across turned out to be Maggie's favourite. A cotton-top tamarin (a tiny monkey) was hopping around a tree with no cage of any kind. Later Georgie was torn between this animal and the mousedeer for her favourite.

The zoo is in a lovely setting and there are no bars between you and the animals. Sometimes there are glass walls, but when it comes to the taipan I have no problem with that. My favourite were the orangutans. It was very sad, though to read the explanatory note that said in about ten years the only place you will find orangutans will be in zoos. Their native habitat is rapidly being bulldozed to make way for palm oil plantations.

Jess loved the proboscus monkey. There was the tiniest of babies clinging on to its mother and we sat watching what appeared to be the baby's big sister stealing the baby from her mother and running off with it, only to have the mother catch up and snatch the baby back, scolding big sister into the process.

We spent three happy hours at the zoo, but were tired by the end of it. Three hours of walking through tropical heat was taking its toll. Besides, we had to make tracks if we were to keep our high tea appointment. The high tea was no disappointment. I was a little miffed that we didn't have a three-tiered plate with assorted goodies piled on it, but this was more than compensated by the fact that it was another all-you-can-eat buffet. We feasted on tempura prawns, dumplings, noodles, laksa, fresh fruit, pastries, bread and butter pudding and creme brulee.

What were we to do in the 4 hours before we had to head out to catch our flight? Of course, the girls had a ready answer for that. 'Swimming!!' Jess and I lazed by the pool while girls spent more time enjoying the last of the day in the water.
