We gradually descended into the Sacramento Valley, the twisty and forested road giving way to duller, flatter and more arid landscape. Fortunately the roadworks did stop as well. We stopped outside Vacaville and ate our picnic. The uninteresting Lagoon Valley park was home to loads of geese who took more than a passing interest in our Subway sandwiches. In fact, it was almost like a scene from The Birds. We walked smartly to the car to seek refuge!
Approaching San Francisco the I-80 became several lanes of fast moving vehicles. It was a bit scary but really rather exciting. As for the view of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge as we drove over Bay Bridge - wow! We reached the airport quite easily and didn't have to wait too long for Christine. The Comfort Inn nearby was reached in ten minutes.
Then, unexpectedly I received a message from Martin Smith, who was staying nearby on business. A quick cab ride and we were enjoying a delightful meal at Positano's in San Mateo. Wonderful food and wine - and company - and thanks to Neil finding a piece of metal in his pasta, free pud and cocktail.
