Punta del Este is like a glamorous resort with impressive modern high rise hotels and appartment blocks right on the beach front, its like a mini Rio to look at. However, it being the low season now, it is kind of deserted, many of the hotels and boarded up for the winter and there were very few tourists.
However we found a descent little hostel and spent a night there, visited about the only place open which was the massive casino, had a couple of hands of black jack.
We decided to hire a car in Montevideo, and after being turned down at Avis for being under 21, we turned the corner and found 'Global Motors' and a bloke who when we asked what the requirements were for hiring a car said, "If you come for a car, I assume you can drive", and that was pretty much it. We got a Chevrolet estate for not much money and just about squeezed our 5 massive backpacks, 3 guitars and other stuff which just seems to accumulate in random bags inside the boot. We can all drive and took it in turns, but once we had left Montevideo, we were pretty much alone on the open road heading East, running through miles and miles of cattle fields on surprisingly good, dead straight roads. Its a beautiful landscape to drive through, and having a car meant we could just stop anywhere along the way, we stopped off at a really nice beach halfway between Montevideo and Punta del Este, there was nobody on it and we spent a few hours in the sunshine dune boarding and playing footy.
