Fray Bentos was 4 hours on a bus from Colonia, we wanted to do something else before meeting the other boys in Montevideo and this Pie Factory caught our eye in the guide book. The section on Uruguay in our book is about 20 pages long, but one thing they mention in it is the Extract of Meat Factory and museum in Fray Bentos, as a bizarre and interesting experience. It was pretty bizarre and interesting, the town was a nice little place, i dont think they have many tourists and probably none at this time of year, we got a room in quite a nice hotel for not much money. The meat factory looked closed but some woman took us in and checked if we could visit, and we were greeted by the site director, who took us in, and was very pleased to be able to have a conversation with us in English. The old office is left pretty much as it was, with english typewriters and books all over the place, its really wierd. Everything says made in Sheffield or Liverpool. The museum was pretty cool, there were the heads of a 2 headed cow preserved in a big jar, which was a highlight. We got shown into the warehouses where the meat is cooked and where the power was generated, it was really strange, and we just kept asking this lady if we could look in these rooms and warehouses and she seemed to be willing to unlock every door for us, not really sure if that is what the standard tour involves when tourist groups come in high season, which she said they do, in large numbers. We spent a couple of hours wandering around and got some really cool photos of wierd machinery and meat hooks. Somehow we got away without paying aswell, there was a big sign saying ´´50 pesos´´ on the door. We visited an art gallery because there wasnt much left to do, and then got a bus to Montevideo in the evening.
