The last 10 days we have spent in Buenos Aires, the capital of
Argentina. It is an amazing city, the most developed and Europeen
feeling city we have visited so far, its clean and beautiful to look
at, with a mix of colonial and modern architecture. Everyone has told
us how crazy the nightlife is in BA and we definately found that for
ourselves. Meeting up with the boys lead to more celebrations and
parties and the lifestyle here seems to be to stay up all night and
sleep all day. However we did get to see some sights in the day,
including the amazing cemetery where Evita is buried, the famous
Japonese gardens, the zoo, and a Boca Juniors football match. We also
went to San Telmo markets twice which are so cool, it is like wondering
through an Argentinian Covent Garden, with amazing musicians and
entertainers and crafts and things dotted along the cobbled streets,
both times we spent hours wondering around. The football match was
particulalry exciting because Boca were playing Racing, a team at the
bottom of the league, who, if they lost, would be relagated, the score
was 1-1 until the last minute when Boca got the winner, the Boca fans
went crazy and the Racing fans went mad, throwing chairs and stuff
around, we were under a sheltered stand so weren`t uner fire but it was
pretty crazy to see. The stadium is much smaller than the Maracena that
we went to in Rio, but its famous steep sides make it very impressive.
We met some amazing people in are hostel, lots of people our age and
staying put for a longer period of time (as most people seem to in BA)
means that you get to know people really well. We had some absolutely
phenominally tasty steak for very little money and some great wine too.
I keep remembering other stuff we did, should have done bit by bit
during the stay in BA but didnt make time for it, we went to a Tango
performance, something people have recommended to us very highly, and
it was amazing. I don`t know much about dancing but the live tango band
were soo good, it soudned like a recording, and the dancing was
stunning. We were actually with a dance teacher from england, and she
said that it was the best tango dancing she had ever seen, and the show
itself, with beautiful outfits and kind of wierd story lines, was
overall extremely entertaining, the building, being the oldest tango
cafe in BA, was beautiful too. We went to a live percussion
performance, this amazing percussion group called Bomba de Tiempo
including mainly african drums, were mindblowingly good, crazy rhythms,
and they performed in an old disused warehouse, which when packed with
thousands of people, was like a nightcluba nd everyone was dancing and
jumping to the drumming. You could by beers in litre glasses too which
was pretty exciting. There are loads of really nice parks in the city
and we spent a few days just lazing around in them, had a picnic once
which was nice, and generally the weather was really nice, although not
hot, sunny and warm.
