Left Arequipa at 6:30am to miss the morning rush.  Our desert highway offered us great long views.  The road was fairly straight forward, but for our entertainment value, they had to throw in some construction to keep us on our toes.  We arrived at the Chile border around 1:00 and left at 3.  What should be a simple process is complicated by chasing forms and stamps.  For example, we show up at the customs office with our passports.  They say we need a form (everyone has this form except us).  They point in the direction we came from aprox 1 km back.  Turns out the forms are supplied at a roadside food stand.  Of course, this is the form outlet.  We should have known. This just adds to the zest of the day.  Wheeled into Arica early in the afternoon and hailed a cab for service to a nice room (this is our favorite way to find a hotel). This marks our 12th crossing and almost 16,000 km away from home base.  We feel a little closer to home today after seeing a Mcdonalds.  We're just 20kms into Chile and we are noticing a higher standard of living.  All is well.
