LA PAZ... 3600 METER!...
BE READY FOR ALTITUDE AND RELATED DISORDERS
(REALLY HIGH ALTITUDE)
I am writing this entry after four days of suffering from altitude sickness...
I was tired an a bit exhausted in San Pedro de Atacama. San Pedro de Atacama is around 2500 that we can call there high also. But MY following story for La Paz is to be taken into acount by all traveller (PLEASE)...
While I was talking tourism companies and people in San Pedro de Atacama, the first thing was their advice about high altitude
After a half-day cycling tour I got my lesson and stay at Hostel two days. But after two months in South Americas diverse and extreme environments I was still tired and little bit ill. Since I could not get any medical care properly there, I decided to come La Paz... I thoght that La Paz would be a very nice remedy to my problems. But actually THE ALTITUDE really STRUCK me...
This is the fourth day after coming La Paz. I just find enough energy to write and to do something.
THE LESSON LEARNED
The warnings about altitude is NOT A JOKE and must be considered seriously and cautiously...
WHAT TO DO THEN ?
I am not a medical doctor, but I can advice;
before coming high altitude;
- TRY TO HAVE HIGH PHYSICAL STRENGTH,
- FOLLOW GRADUALLY ASCENDING ROUTES (if possible),
- DRINK WATER (at least 3 lt a day with constant intervals),
- DO NOT SMOKE,
- DO NOT EAT MUCH,
- READ ABOUT ALTITUDE SICKNESS.
If you feel bad or in any circumstances, for a certain period depending on your phsycal condition and compatibility;
- REST AND RELAX IN BED,
- DRINK WATER and MATE DE COCA (in BOLIVIA and PERU) (as much as you can),
- CHEW COCA LEAVES (In South America eg
- DO NOT PARTICIPATE EXHAUSTING ACTIVITIES (
- BE READY FOR;
- many more annoying symptoms.
TIME WILL HELP 4 DAYS, 5 DAYS or so...
Do not decide very early to give up travelling, THERE IS SO MUCH TO SEE IN EVERY COUNTRY; BUT BE CAREFUL and TAKE INTO ACOUNT...
I restate nd want to emphasize that this is the conclusion of my challenging experience...
Since these are personal conclusions and advices I am open and waiting to your scientific and personal comments... PLEASE DO SO...
TRAVEL SAFE, TRAVEL HEALTHY...
