On the road again........................ Finally made it out of Minnesota and into South Dakota. The first couple of hours were about the same as Minnesota corn fields everywhere.
My first stop was in Mitchell, the home town of one of the doctors I worked for and also the home of the "Corn Palace" where they say they are " All Ears". Well they are right!
It is a Covent ion and Sports Center that has the exterior covered with thousands of bushels of corn, grain, grasses, wild oats, brome grass, blue grass, rye, straw and wheat. It was corny, but neat to see.
I then continued down the highway looking at more cornfields. As I was driving along on Interstate 90, I went up a small incline and when I reached the top, there I saw a beautiful site of the Missouri river. It was so pretty.
As I went along the scenery started to change. Small hills and miles and miles of Prairie land. This country has so much beauty.
My next stop was was "1880 Town" which is right outside of Murdo, ND. The 1880 town began as a movie set, though it was never used for filming by the movie company that constructed it. The set was given to a local resident, Clarence Hullinger, in payment for the antiques he supplied for the planned movie. The town consists mainly of old buildings that were found in the area, and over the last several decades, it has been expanded with many additional authentic old buildings, artifacts and memorabilia. They also had props there used in the movie "Dances with wolves" I recommend this place to see. It gives you a break from the road and lets you see some of the ND history.
Next was the Badlands. I was in awe of what I was seeing. I now call the Badlands.......God's sand castles. You never can see enough of them. Each formation is so unique. I took more time there then I had planned because the view was so inspiring. I got to see Bison and Prairie Dogs. Did you know that Prairie Dogs squeak? They are so cute................... I wanted to take one with me.
My final stop of the day was in Wall, SD. This is the home of "Wall Drug" a definite tourist trap with lots of small stores inside the building, but a must stop at and see.
I drove on into Rapid City, SD, where I am staying the night. I have a friend that I talk to online who lives here and we met up and had a nice dinner and good conversation. I have a few more people to meet along the way and I am so excited about meeting all of them. Don't worry Mom............. I now how to meet people safely.
