Where I stayed
A beautiful white house

After just over 24 hours since leaving what used to be my shared dungeon in London I arrive at a beautiful white house in Boossa, Southern Sri Lanka, that will serve as my residence for the next 3 months. I arrive feeling like I don't even know what day it is, tired, dehydrated (but somehow bloated?! My pretty feet have transformed themselves in trotters, struggling to fit in my converse) from all the flying and heat… I seem to remember being sort of ok as I landed in Colombo, but the 3.5hr drive here definitely killed me off, placing a dent in my travel ego. I won’t have to start teaching until Monday, so have the weekend to get all my stuff together and prepare myself…

No one else is at the house where I'm staying apart from the owner D, who is heavily involved with the school and the project, meaning it's just us two and the dogs.
D and I have been getting on very well, and I follow him around when he goes to run all his errands around Galle and near the jungle. I was allowed to feed the 2 dogs really spicy rotis on Saturday, which distracted one of them from gnawing on D's furniture and walls for a whole 5 minutes.

Planned to go the beach for a couple hours Sunday, but had to run back to the house fairly soon as a scary man with no nose (i kid you not, it looked like it had been sliced off) came to give me a coconut he hand-picked himself off a tree dangerously close to where i was sitting. As i hurried off some people told me he's crazy (i need to learn the Sinhalese for "Thanks a bunch for standing there and watching while he harassed me with a coconut, I sort of gathered that myself…"). I’m sure they had the best intentions, so all's good.
Have had several encounters with unknown vegetables and unrecognised creatures (the latter being the most worrying ones to me).
3 giant grasshoppers
4 giant flying cockroaches (someone thoughtfully pointed out they're not cockroaches but beatles, i'm not quite sure what the point they were trying to make is..)
2 fruit bats (by the size of them you'd think the fruits they're eating are whole melons - they are huge, hang upsidedown just like dracula, with their wings wrapped around them- and their wingspan is about half a metre i think)
3 frogs – they are not bad actually. They are just bigger than I’ve ever seen them. If I got a plate of them as  “fried frog’s legs” (not that I would..) I would send them back complaining I’d been mistakenly served chicken drumsticks ..
umpteen cows -they are everywhere
Uncountable gekoes - they dont really bother me
fireflies - quite cool in the garden, not so cool trapped INSIDE my mosquito net.
All of the above were found IN or closely AROUND the house. Thank god for my mosquito net around my bed (that I do not like sharing with winged creatures).
Very humid, i suddenly have chin length hair again.
Lots of tea. very good. lots of coconut, lots of chilli (very good also together).
Very small bananas. weird buffalo yoghurt... I tried some and quite liked it, although i wish I hadn’t heard "it tastes a bit like mozzarella, no?" as i was eating mine mixed with palm syrup... but yes, very good.
