Travel report 3
Entry 3 of 4 | show all | print this entry |
Greeting from the twin cities, i have 30 minutes on my library computer, so this is going to be a SHORT report.
I think the last report was from Seattle where i had a jolly good time hanging out with friends and arie, the white bird (I forgot if it is a parrot or a kakadu). I drank lots of wine, ate good food, braved the Seattle traffic and pike street market and hiked up in the alpine lake area. Did i mention the new futuristic looking Seattle library? You gotta go and see (at least that's what my friend told me to do and off i went). Cool place.
From WA, i went to Trego, MT to stay with a wonderful servas host again. I slept on the outside porch, braving cold Montana nights (clean fresh air). Explored the flathead lake area and went to Polson to visit the "miracle of America museum" which is a bizarre museum which displays everything one can wish for depicting lots of things from America's military, industrial and cultural history. I loved whitefish (pop. 4300)which prides itself as the "recreational capital of Montana" and features Montana's one and only frank Lloyd wright building. I spent about 2.5 days in glacier (going in and out of the park in order to have the car fixed in whitefish). Stopped in Hungry horse to eat 2 pieces of huckleberry pie. YUMMY!!! I think glacier could be considered one of my favorite places. I would love to come back in the summer (minus the tourists of course) and do some serious hiking. I made a friend in the par - had a conversation with billy as in billy the mountain goat. We got along well, took lots of pictures of each other, talked about life and food sources, the harsh winter, the tourists who come along and want to pad billy, etc..... very enjoyable. Did i also mention that i finally got to see me first black bear at medicine lake in glacier? yep, and i have proof.
From glacier to billings with another servas host (did i mention servas before? if not, go check it out at www.servas.org). From Billings (via little bighorn battlefield and Reno-Benteen battlefield)to south Dakota absolutely wonderful. Spent half a day driving through the black hills which no one to see near and far. then stopped in Custer, drank coffee, checked email and off to custer state forest and the night show at Mt. rushmore. well, it wasn't a show, just the lightning of the Mt. Lots of tourists, i guess school vacations started. Drove all the scenic roads around the monument, needles scenic highway, iron mountain road and hiked up "cathedral of spires", slept in the woods and headed for the wildlife loop the next day. Buffalos hurray...... loved them, watched them, talked to them, took pictures of them, felt pretty stupid just standing there and taking pics......but still loved to watch them and would probably still be there. From there to the badlands and afterwards to wall drugs (yes, it is cheese but i wanted to see it anyway). Stopped in Pierre, the capital of SD at 10PM to see the smallest capitol in the US (so I think). Sleepy little state capital.
From SD to MN, endless farms and lakes ( and i finally have cell phone connection again after being out of reach since Montana). Exploring the twin cities, hoping to get some rhubarb pie along the way. 4 more states to go and i hope my last report is going to be a little bit more comprehensive. 10 minutes left on the computer and i got to write a German version of this (which will be much shorter).
Big hug to all of you, I think of you.
Claudia (yes, my friend from NZ is still traveling with me).
