During the October Holidays, my friend Carol and I went to Pinggu for 2 days to stay with a farmer and do some hiking. We had a wonderful 5 hour hike following a goat trail up into the mountains. Our host from the Jiangjunguan village supplied us with lots of information about the history and geography of the area. He took us to the start of the trail and off we went.....
It was an absolutely beautiful and challenging hike following a small goat trail to the top of a valley passing goldmines guarded by villagers during the day. The entry to the mines in this area was cemented as the govt was afraid they would crash on miners.
It was date harvesting time and we ate ourselves silly on dates. We had two wonderful days and will have many more opportunities to go back there
After returning to BJ, I repacked my pack and left the next day with my friend Sue for Huairou. Our goal was to hike the wild Great Wall from Huanghuasheng to Jiaokou.
Our first stop was the village of Shui Tang Zi which we reached after a 5hour hike. The next day, which was as beautiful as the previous day with blue skies and magnificent views, took us 10 hours to reach the village of San Cha. Here we stayed with a farmer family who fed us as there was no tomorrow. Our room had a big kang bed which fits about 10 people. Unfortunately, it was raining the next day, so we decided to explore the village surroundings and continue our Great Wall another time.
