Longing for warmth and sun, we left Katoomba for a stop at Byron Bay. We stayed at the Cape Byron YHA, close to the beach and it walk ways. From here, we explored the beaches and Lighthouse, rented a bike, and explored the little bohemian town. Though Byron Bay is crowded with young people, it retains a very laid back character which makes it a fun place to hang out. We could have stayed longer but we are pressing on north to see the other wonders of the East Coast. From Byron Bay, we went to Brisbane, Australia's "most liveable city", and the capital of Queensland, the Sunshine State. Not having much interest in visiting Brisbane itself, we boarded a train and bus to Victoria jetty and a ferry to Coochiemudlo Island. The name 'Coochiemudlo'(meaning high ground, red soil) refers to the red rock found on the island. In spite of 'mud' appearing in the name, there is only a little mangrove - the rest is beach. Here we were welcomed by our servas hosts Nadine and Norman and their neighboors. We explored the island which offers a great variety of birds such as the laughing Kookabura, noisy Galahs and the majestic looking Curlew. We played tennis, harvested starfruit, walked around the beaches of the island, explored the wetland forest and visited a small animal farm. We enjoy hanging out with our hosts and generally are in feel rather relaxed and peaceful. We spent 2 days here and will embark to our next adventure to visit Hervey bay and Fraser island.
