We drove a full day from Zipolite to arrive at San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas.  The town is another colonial mountain city but has a recent revolutionary past.  The Zapatistas held the town captive in 1994 for a short time to call attention to indigenous people's rights.  Their struggle continues to this day and many supporters are still vocal in the area.

While in SC, we stayed at a newly remodeled hotel owned by the nicest family in all of Mexico.  They constantly provided valuable information and even later let us park our car at their house while we traveled to Guatemala.  If anyone reading this ever visits SC, we highly recommend staying at Hotel Antigua on Madero Street.  Eugenio and his family will take great care of you.

We took a day trip to two indigenous villages on the outskirts of SC.  The tours felt like we had stepped back in time about 400 years (aside from the use of Coca-cola).  We did not get many photos of the people because most did not like their photograph being taken.

We also took a long day trip to Agua Azul, Misol-Ha, and the Mayan ruins of Palenque.

Swine flu hit Mexico City while we were here.  The news of the outbreak was somewhat slow to hit SC as we did not see many masks until three days later.  We did eventually notice a drop in tourists.
