We drove in to Mazatlan from El Fuerte on a Sunday evening.  We opted to take the "cuota's" (toll roads) since they were much faster and nicer than the "libre" or free roads.  We ended up paying about $24 US in tolls.

The streets were pretty busy that evening.  We ended up staying at Hotel Belmar, which back in it's day, was probably a nice hotel.  Lonely Planet even said that John Wayne preferred to stayed there on his visits to Mazatlan.  So, we thought if it was good enough for John Wayne, it was good enough for us.  Darren didn't mind it, Kristi thought it was dark and crusty.  It did have a nice ocean view though.  We waited two days for hot water and still didn't get any.  They kept telling us they had to turn it on and to wait about an hour.

We read that Mazatlan had bullfights on Sundays from December up until Easter.  So, we asked around at several different places and road our bikes to the Plaza de Toros (the bullring), but nobody seemed to know what we were talking about.

Darren went mountain biking one morning with Fernando (local bike shop owner) and Gary (retiree from California).  Fernando built all the trails himself on his cousin's land.

We took a walk up to El Faro (the lighthouse) which is 135 meters above sea level and said to be the second-highest lighthouse in the world.  We took the walk up for a spectacular view of Mazatlan.

For our last day in Mazatlan we took a trip over Stone Island.  We decided not to take a tour over to the island and waste our money.  We paid twenty pesos each for a round trip ticket with the water taxi.  Apparently Stone Island (Isla de la Piedra) was once an island, but is no longer.  It was nice, but it still wasn't the Caribbean.
