The island province of Palawan has been declared as a nature sanctuary of the world, and for good reason. It is wrapped in a mantel of rainforests, outstanding dive sites, majestic mountains, primeval caves, and pristine beaches. It is surrounded by a coral shelf that abounds with varied and colorful marine life. It boasts of exotic flora and fauna, like the mousedeer and the scaly anteater, that are found nowhere else.

Palawan waters are among the best in the world, not only for diving but also for fishing. A diver's paradise, it has miles of sub-surface coral and rainbow reef walls which surround the coasts and coves teeming with rich marine life.

Coron is part of the Busuanga Island, 30 minutes away from the airport.  In general, Coron is a small town with very friendly locals, and i mean very. friendly. locals. A small town that it was, people great you with the warmest hellos and smiles and the people through their easy access networking, make it convenient for you to look for cheap accomodations. The cheapest we found is at PHP250/night and an extra PHP100 for exceeding persons. That's around USD6/night.

Getting around is at a cheap price of PHP 6/pax depending on your destinatation. But to get around, it would cost more than 6bucks.

Everything here is relatively really cheap.

The island itself is surrounded by more than 80 smaller islands with emerald clear water, prestine white sand beaches and corals full of marine life. Coron is best for adventure. Coron Bay has some of the best wreck diving spots in Asia. 12 of them, in fact.

From Coron Town, we rented a traditional Philippine pumpboat from the locals for Php1500 good for the whole day.

Coron Island is 20 minutes boat from Coron Town. It is an inhabited island.

Cayangan Lake is in Coron Island. A Php 100 entrance fee is asked at the reception which is beautiful as it is a blue lagoon. To get to the lake, a dirt-rocky stairs was propped for assitance. Halfway up is spot for aerial shots of the lagoon, a picture opportunity that can never go wrong. Decending half way, we arrived at Cayangan Lake. It was a feeling of beach and forest at the same time. I haven't had such a feeling before that. The Lake was still, calm and deep. Blue as you can imagine.Coming from the salty shores outside the rim of the lake, one would think the waters be salt. But no. It was fresh water and there were fish! I was amazed and unhesitant to jump in!

Small rock. We had lunch on an island rock surrounded by corals where a small hut had been installed. Crab, adobo, and pork in shrimp paste was our menu. We ate with no hesitation. Eating with hands made it even more interesting!

Barracuda Lake is also on Coron Island. Named as such because it was said to house barracudas but fortunately dint see any. Entrance was Php75/pax. This lake was deep and a bit scary coz of it's deep dark blue water where anything could just pop out. There were shrimps and catfishes on the wallside of the lake. I love this lake.

We also went to a sort of enclosed sea lake where entrace is a 2 meter wide tunnel. On high tide, access to this area would mean a small and quick dive under that tunnel. Pretty cool! Alot of fishes as well. With walls of coral, this spot is great for diving.

Siete Picados. Or the Seven Islands. 7 small islands surrounded with corals. We spent alot of snorkeling here. An old enthusiastic park ranger was eager enough to guide us to spots where most big fishes and huge corals dwelled.

Maquinit Hot Springs. This was quite of a surprise. I had never heard of a SALT WATER HOTSPRINGS. A pool had been installed to dam in the water as it had supposedly went direct to the sea. Now, it's a pool of hot salty springs. 40 degrees celcius. On a hot summer day, dipping here is ill-adviced. :p

Coron Island is in the Palawan Islands. Home to some 1700 islands of pure beauty. Untouched by commercialism and exploitation.

We are all invited to enjoy our wonders. But as they all say: Take nothing but pictures, Leave nothing but footsteps. Keep nothing but memories, Kill nothing but time.
