We had already booked a connecting flight from Mexico City to Cancun, so as to avoid another long bus journey! Greg was feeling shitty during the flght and ended up throwing up in the toilet and moaning and groaning throughout the flight! As a result we BOTH didn't get any sleep and felt just grand the next morning!
We landed in Cancun, after catching our connecting flight, at about 11am. We caught the shuttle bus into the city and drove along the famous 'hotel zone' on the way to our hostel - Casa del Mariachi - which was on the edge of the downtown area. We checked into our room, which was lovely....really big, light and more like a little apartment. We were served breakfast each morning in the room which we ate at a little table next to the bed....it was really sweet. It was great being in the downtown area as it felt more like the real Mexico. The hotel zone was fun and filled with shops and restaurants but didn't reflect the Mexican culture and traditions at all.
After unpacking a bit, we decided it was time to head out and explore a bit. We were really hungry and so went into a Mexican restaurant just around the corner from our hostel called El Tacolette. I was really excited at this point as one of the reasons I was really looking forward to coming to Mexico was to try all the REAL Mexican food....
.....I ordered chicken and steak enchiladas and Greg had a traditional dish called Alamandre. They were both awesome and we were served a little dish of nachos with three interesting looking types of salsa as a complimentary starter. Being a lover of guacamole I quickly tucked into that only to discover that this was the REAL thing...my mouth was on fire! The chopped up tomato and onion dish was filled with coriander and little bits of chilli and that was lovely, but the dark brown salsa was the nicest...I'm not sure what it was made of, but it was good! We then walked around the neighbourhood a bit and found a WALMART where we bought a few supplies, like fruit, water etc. and headed back to our room. We were pretty tired after our difficult night on the aeroplane and so crashed pretty early. I felt like a different person when I woke up the next morning and was ready to check out Cancun's beaches!
