Entry 36 of 40 | show all | print this entry

Setting off at 7am, we eagerly headed off into the Eucalyptus forests and closer to our destination.
I walked alone for a while to gather my thoughts and every emotion ran through me in those last 25km.  It was a strange feeling, one monet feeling excited, then scared, angry, sad...everything.
I had no idea how the walk into the city would feel.

Just before the city, you rise up Monte Gozo, and from there you get your first view of the city below.  On the top of the Mount, a huge group of Portuguese scouts were singing, that was the first sign of the tears.  My sunglasses hid them from the others, but i could feel the emotion building.
Walking down from there, with the city of Santiago in front of me, again i weeped tears of achievement.
The long walk from the city limits into the old city gave me chance to talk to Ant, Lenny and Andrea briefly, me and Ant congratulating each other on an amazing feat, finally achieved.
Just 20 meters from the Square, I lost Ant, turns out he was chatting to a girl!...but i waited under the arch to the square with just one corner left to turn.  We waked in, side by side and looked up to our left and saw the twin spires of the magnificent cathedral.  We congratulated each other again, made our way to the centre of the square where all the Caminos meet from around Europe, dumped our packs down and embraced.

It was a great feeling to be there, but in the square, strangely, i felt no real emotion.  I didnt cry, although i was expecting to, nor either was i exstatic.  I just guess, i felt content i had arrived, finally.

Im sitting here now, in an internet cafe, having walked 798km from france, over the pyrenees and on to Santiago, having enjoyed the city life, shopping, sightseeing, drinking, eating.  Ive met friends from the trip who finished the day before and today, greeting them as they enter the square, and tomorrow begins a new adventure.

From here, its 87km and 3 days walking to the ´end of the earth´, Fisterra.  I had thought long and hard about it but i now realise its a perfect end to this amazing journey.  The scenery is amazing and the Camino is quieter...i just must go.

Tomorrow morning, early again, we set off, maybe just Lenny, Marre, and I...Ant is as yet undecided, for a further 3 days of magnificent scenery, maybe even more so.
On the 16th I should be swimming in the atlantic ocean.
Until next time, Hasta Luego.

Greg and Co.

From all back here in a cold and damp ( and relatively safe) Higgins Walk our very hearty congratulations, a fantastic effort and time for a well earned rest - I guess the coast is looking good so a stroll down to the atlantic for a dip is just what the proverbial doctor ordered.
Take care and keep the entries coming at leas6t till you get back to blighty - you are coming... show all
