Happy New Year everyone!
Greg and I spent Christmas Eve with some friends in the park around a couple propane fueled campfires. Then on Christmas Day about 250 people from the park met in the ballroom for an organized pot luck turkey dinner followed by a dance. The food was delicious but my favorite was the beet rolls. They are like a cabbage roll with a ground beef and rice filling however beet leaves were used instead of cabbage leaves. Yummy. The big party was on New Year's Eve with food and dancing, and then a champagne fountain at midnight. On New Year’s Day there was moose milk, more food, and more dancing. So it was a busy few days.
I have joined a group that makes and donates crafted items to the local women’s shelter and oncology unit in the general hospital here. As a group we make quilts, blankets and knitted items. It’s very rewarding and also an opportunity to work with some wonderful women.
We are also joining a hiking group in the park. Once a month we will be hiking to destinations near Yuma. We haven’t done any hiking here but I have heard that there are quite a few interesting hikes in the surrounding mountains and desert so I am really looking forward to it.
We recently bought new Schwinn bicycles and have been cycling along the canals. The trails are hard packed sand, almost like concrete, and because of the low humidity here we can ride for miles and miles without breaking a sweat, but my thighs let me know that I am getting a good workout.
Greg and I went to a concert in the park last night – The Gordy and Debbie Show. They are a couple singers based in Branson, Missouri that have a very entertaining show. We sang, danced, and laughed. The evening was subtitled Death by Chocolate and every table had a large platter of desserts: key lime tarts, cupcakes, macaroons, trifles, Nanaimo bars, coconut squares, eclairs, and others. Delicious. But for me the highlight was the show. They kept us entertained for the full 2 hours that they were on the stage. We are considering stopping in Branson in the fall so that we can see their show again.
