Oct 25, 2013

This morning we walked around downtown Memphis and took some pictures of the incredible architecture. Then we toured the Gibson guitar factory. Almost all of the manufacturing is hand done so we spent quite a bit of time just watching the craftsmen take these incredible guitars from the raw wood to the shaping, painting, finishing, and testing. Unfortunately we weren’t permitted to take photos. Altogether there are about 80 people completing 50 guitars every day. The guitars we saw in the retail store ranged in price from $199 to more than $5000. They are works of art.

Then it was time for lunch. We wanted to sample Tennessee barbecue before we left the state and a tour guide told us the best ribs were at the Blues City Café on Beale Street. So I read up on it and saw that the restaurant was featured on ‘A Taste of America’ and on the Bobby Flay Show. So off we went. Greg ordered the ribs and I ordered the catfish. Needless to say, everything was delicious.

We were stuffed. So we walked to our next activity, about 2 miles away. This was to the Sun Studio, where Elvis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, BB King, and so many others recorded their music. The history, the history. The recording studio and office is the same as it was in the 1950s, the apartment where Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison would stay for awhile is now the exhibit area. We listened to Elvis’ demo tape and some other recordings that were done in the studio. Greg and I stood in the same spot and held the same microphone that Elvis used.

We will be leaving Memphis tomorrow and we couldn’t leave without taking a few more pictures at Graceland. Oh my, we have Elvis fever!

Wow! For anyone growing up in the 50's and 60's, visiting the birthplace of rock n roll is like going to Mecca! Nice to live it through your eyes.

I spent this morning catching up on your travels. Thank you. Travel Safe and does Star 2 have a washer and dryer for clothes??? Inquiring minds want to know!

Love following you on your trip

StarTwo is plumbed for a washer and dryer but we are using the space as a closet/pantry area. It's easier to do the wash in a campground laundry, that way we can do multiple loads at the same time, a real time saver.

So glad that you both are enjoying your trip, so far it appears that you are seeing all new areas, gee just watching the pictures and your comments of what you are seeing is just like being there with you. What a treat for me. Love
