Midday temperature: 20C

This morning Greg and I rekindled our Acadian roots and visited the Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site in St. Martinville, about a half hour south of our campground. The story of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem Evangeline took place in St. Martinville and here there is a museum comprised of an Acadian homestead furnished as it would have been in the mid 1700s. The guide explained the history of the British expulsion of the Acadians and the lifestyle of the families that settled in this area of Louisiana. Their land grants were swamps but by using a system of dykes they drained the swamp land transforming it into arable land.

After the museum, we visited the Evangeline Oak Tree. This tree in the middle of town is said to have inspired Longfellow to write his poem. The tree is massive and over 300 hundred years old but what impressed us was the Bayou Teche that flows near this tree. You can just imagine the paddlewheel boats travelling down this wide bayou. We also saw a magnolia tree, in full bloom. Beautiful.

Our next stop was Avery Island, the location of the Tabasco Sauce factory. Avery Island, 3.5 square miles, is actually a salt dome and besides the Tabasco factory there is a salt mine. Unfortunately tours of the salt mine are not offered any more but we were able to tour the Tabasco factory. They bottle about 750,000 bottles of sauce every day and ship it to more than 20 countries. After the tour we sampled six different Tabasco sauces, Tabasco ice cream, Tabasco jellies, Tabasco pickles, etc. Needless to say, by the time we left the area my mouth was a-tingling.
