Where I stayed
John's and Bertha's
We arrived in El Centro mid afternoon and met our friends John and Bertha. John is originally from New Glasgow but has lived in the US most of his adult life. We know them because they have a trailer in Pictou close to us, and they also have a nice home in a mobile community here in El Centro, a home in the desert about an hour north of El Centro, and a home in Mexico. John says he’s house poor, no wonder. There wasn’t any place to park Star at John’s so we set up at Wal-Mart, about a block away.
Shortly after we arrived at John and Bertha’s it rained for about 15 minutes. We had watched the rain clouds moving our way before we arrived in El Centro so we weren’t surprised. However, John was really surprised and said that it never rains this time of year, it only rains in August and February. I guess we brought the rain with us.
El Centro is a small town but because of its proximity to Mexico it has a big Bayers Lake type shopping area and a large variety of restaurants. It’s also very close to a marine military base and the jets and helicopters seem to be always overhead. Interestingly, El Centro is below sea level and some water tanks and buildings have markings on them to indicate sea level
There are acres and acres of farm lands near El Centro growing every type of fruit and vegetables you can think of. Utah farmers rent open fields to graze their sheep. There are usually 500 sheep to a field. The numbers are easy to determine because there is one black lamb for every one hundred sheep.
We went out to a local restaurant for supper then back to Star for the night.
