Midday Temp: 17C

We spent today on Alcatraz
Island. I didn’t realize
that the prison is part of the National Park Service. It actually started as a
fort during the civil war. It became a military prison until the mid 1930s when the US government
gave it to the department of corrections. Then it became a
notorious prison that housed the worst convicts. This continued until the
prison was closed in the 1963.

The tour started with a short Discovery Channel
film about the prison’s history and then an audio tour narrated by actual
correctional officers and former prisoners. The narration guided us through the
prison and talked about a couple attempted prison escapes. It was very
interesting but sobering too.

Then it was back to our RV park and deciding where we are
travelling to next.
