Weather: cold, dark, gloomy, rainy, foggy, windy

We decided to take a ferry to Washington. After getting advice from a few people, we opted for the Vancouver Island to Anacortes, WA ferry which sails across Puget Sound. The ferry left Sidney (just north of Victoria) at noon and we thought we would be in Anacortes about 1:30 leaving a couple hours to drive to a campground.

Well, about an hour into the crossing there was an announcement that a whale had been spotted in front of the ferry. So the ferry stopped, in the middle of Puget Sound, and we waited about 15 minutes. No whale. The ferry continued its route and about 1:30 it docked, but not in Anacortes. It stopped at San Juan Island to pick up some other passengers. We still had another 90 minutes on the ferry. So on we go. We finally docked at Anacortes at 3:15, got off the ferry, drove through the town and became part of a parade that was moving down the main street. All of this delay resulted in us approaching Seattle at 5:00 in the middle of Friday afternoon rush hour traffic on the interstate. This was 5 lanes of bumper to bumper slow moving traffic. We get out of that traffic jam just in time for the Tacoma 5 lane bumper to bumper traffic. At 6:00 we were nowhere near our campground and Greg told me to look for a nearby Wal-mart Supercentre to spend the night. We ended up in Spanaway, a small town east of Tacoma. We bought some ready to eat food and had a late supper. The lady at the deli counter said the Seattle-Tacoma section of the interstate is always busy, but the busiest she ever experienced was last weekend when Justin Bieber was giving a concert in Seattle.

I can tell it was not a great day... just 4 pictures!

Loved this entry - we drove through Seattle on a Sunday and it was still quite busy! These moments, well they seem like hours sometimes, when you hit a big city and the sheer volume of traffic and the size of the roads are overwhelming; scare me to death - I could NEVER drive 'over here'.
