I had forgotten just how expesive food is here in Singapore. Fruit and vegetables, meat and dairy are all crazy prices - $6 for 2L of milk; $12 for a single lamb cutlet; 60c for a small lemon.
On Thursday as we drove in to town we noticed a haze hanging over the city. We later heard that that was due to forest fires in Sumatra and anyone with respiratory problems eg. asthma should avoid exercising outside. Apparently it is quite a common occurrence and although Singapore has complained about the impact of the fires on numerous occasions, it continues to be an ongoing issue, the primary cause being the burning of paddy fields.
Michael and I went with Rebecca and the boys to play soccer for an hour with a few other keen families which was lots of fun. There were 3 or 4 adults playing and 9 or 10 kids and it was great fun. Michael and I did very well considering the heat!
On Saturday Rich and I caught the MRT in to Orchard Road. It has been upgraded and extended since last time we were here and is the first time we've been on it. The stations are spotless (as you would expect in Singapore), and the trains the same. The carriages are joined but don't have interconnecting walls so you can see from one end of the train to the other.
Orchard Road on a Saturday was as busy as ever and we wandered in and out of the shops and malls and even enjoyed the cooking demonstration which taught us how to make popcorn in a wok....brilliant!
Hannah and Zac had overnight stays and Rebecca and Robbie were out for dinner on Saturday night so Dan, Michael and I went down to the local shops and stocked up on chips, chocolate and fizz and sat and watched several episodes of the Adventures of Merlin series which we are all very in to at the moment. Nothing like junk food to win the mother and aunty of the day award!
We've been here a week now and are feeling very chilled out, planning on starting to tick some must-do's off our list this week now we are more acclimatized to the heat again!
