Leiden is the city we will be living in for the next 10 months. We visited it today and we absolutely love it! It is a college town full of young people, shops, wonderful cafes/restaurants, and of course canals. The city is larger than Iowa City, but everything is still within walking (& definitely biking) distance so that is really nice.
We were able to find a furnished apartment that we really like. It has a wonderful location right outside the train station Andrea will be using and also next to Nate's classes. The only draw back is that it is extremely tiny (50m2). The bedroom fits the bed and that is about it! The living room and kitchen are bigger though and there is a balcony. We also have a dishwasher and washing machine (no dryer however- they are rarely used here). We are just very relieved that we have a place to live! We will move in next Monday.
We were also able to meet up with a student from Leiden University. Her name is Rien and she is also studying law. She was extremely nice and helpful- we are very happy to have her as a resource. She informed us that students can use all forms of public transportation (anywhere in the Netherlands) for FREE!! We have already spent $100 on transportation between trains and trams, so we were very grateful for this information. Living with the Van der vis's is continuing to go very well. They have been so nice to us! They are taking us to a real football (soccer) game this Sunday and then on a canal tour next week. We are looking forward to our upcoming trip... we will keep you updated!
